Chapter 86
Cora POV

My mind registered the sound of a motorbike close by, and then it faded into the distance. It wasn’t a bad sound, so it didn’t wake me fully, just enough to say they were bikes, and moving away. Teh sound triggered my memories of the day I was shot. The panic I had for the injured man, who wouldn’t be able to defend himself, although he only complained of a sore shoulder, the way he flipped into the air and landed, he could have other injuries. My dream distorted the accident, making me into a larger hero than I was. Anyone would have done the same to protect their patient. But in my dream, I protected the injured man and took out the shooter, some super hero I was, I have never even held a gun, so my dream was no way close to reality.
My need for the bathroom woke me up, and I raced to the bathroom and sighed as I sat.
‘That was close.’ I thought I was in the bathroom in my dream; it was a weird dream, and I actually believed I had got up and headed to the bathroom.
The shower was hot, just what I needed. After a thorough shampoo and wash, I returned to my room and sat in front of my mirror, braiding my hair. With it still damp, it would have curly waves, but that’s for later; tonight will be braids, tied back out of my face. I put on my uniform and soft walking shoes, pocketed my phone, grabbed my purse and headed out, hungry for food. Gunner said he would drop me off at work and pick me up. I have a ten pm to six am shift, and hopefully not too many difficult patients on my first night.
It was dinnertime for most, but Scones had made me a lunchbox and was ready in the kitchen. A coffee was handed to me.
“Thanks.” I pulled out some yoghurt and berries for breakfast and sat at the kitchen table eating, away from those eating dinner. I needed quiet while I got my headspace right for tonight.
Gunner came in just as I was finishing eating. He looked drained, as if today had been stressful, but his smile brightened when he saw me sitting here.
“Ready for your first night shift?”
“Nopeity nope.” I smiled back, he held out my leather jacket, and that answered my internal question of what mode of transport we would have tonight.
“Time?” He asked, and I looked at my phone. I hadn’t realised it was so late already.
“Yeah, did you eat?”

“Don’t need to worry about me, if there’s food around, be assured I will have my fill.” We laughed as Gunner pulled me to him and walked me out to his bike.
The ride was too short, and way too soon, and I was at the ambulance entrance. A long kiss in the dock, before I turned and walked in, knowing Gunner wouldn’t leave till I was safely inside. Heard his bike pull away as I walked down the hall to my office, removed my jacket, put my lunch in the fridge, logged onto my computer and clocked on.
It was time to catch up with the staff.
Entering the emergency room, I found it jam-packed, with lots of coughing and crying.
“Cora, over here.” A senior nurse called me over to the nurses station. From there, she gave me a rundown of who was on, which doctors I had available for emergency call-in if needed, which patients were in cubicles, and the general handover.
“Good luck.” She clocked out and headed off for home.
I didn’t have time to think from that moment on, I was in work mode, moving from one room to the next, checking on the patients, finding out if nurses needed anything, and advising each one when their breaks would be. I stitched up cuts and abrasions, getting them out the door fast, splinted broken bones, and called a junior nurse to get some puke cleaned up. Helped a doctor with a stabbing incident and a child with head trauma who had fallen out of their cot.
It was go, go, go.
checked which nurse’s break it was and pushed them out to take it.
Before I knew it, one of the doctors suggested having a break, and I was surprised at the time. Now, I was in my office, taking a quick break and eating my lunch after six hours on with no break; I needed to refuel and update some notes. Half an hour later, a phone call had my hour break cut short, as I raced to the ambulance bay, a heart attack victim on the way in.
Two hours later, it was time to knock off. Nurses arrived to relieve the night crew, but Bluey had not yet arrived to take over from me, and no other senior nurse was here either. I had no choice but to continue to work.
Gunner came in and found me at the nurses’ station, informing the nurses where to go.
“Hey, home time?” Gunner asked when he could get a chance
“No senior nurse has arrived. Bluey was due half an hour ago but hasn’t arrived yet and the other senior called in sick. I have no choice but to continue until someone arrives. I have asked the staff co-ordinator to find someone because I am dead on my feet

Scrubs and Bluey left an hour ago; they should have arrived.”
Guess they stopped off somewhere.”
“In a coming accident, two cars will pile up.” The nurse on the phone called out.
“Go relax, might be a while yet.” I left Gunner at the nurses’ station, walking fast to the ambulance dock.
