Chapter 85
Gunner POV
Oddball reacted exactly as I thought he would. He has been talking about moving out of the clubhouse for ages. Now that I’m moving out, he might make the same move. Oddball doesn’t need to be in that office every day, doing club work. He can delegate some of his work to others; he doesn’t need to take it all on. He knows it, just in the past, someone had botched it up, and he took over, because that’s the kind of man he was, is. Still, now he needs to let go a bit, whisper around the ladies was Sticks might be expecting, and if that’s the case, he definitely needs to move out, this was not the kind of environment to raise a child in, visit yet, every day here, with all these men, no. A child’s safety around a loud group of men, at party time, not seeing a little one at their feet was dangerous, and would you want your child to grow up seeing drunk me and woman doing this inappropriate in public, not me, at least on family day, they keep it under control, but on party nights, they let go of any inhibitions, and, R rated would still be considered a mild rating.
Bags are packed, and I was a little surprised at how little I actually had. I know I had never collected mementos, and most of what I had were my clothes, but still, I had thought I would own more. Tomorrow night, Cora goes to work. Tomorrow, she will try to get some sleep before she goes, and hope she manages some, or it will be a long night for her.
The guys will leave to start the stakeout. I will be staying here to coordinate the different groups. Oddball is back in court today and expects Dozer and me to keep things running smoothly with the men on stakeout. This was the largest action we have seen in a long time. Every detail had been covered. Hacker will be up in the morning, with drones out, ready to follow two vans. We don’t have the human resources or drones to follow all of the vans leaving the depot, so we expect the other clubs to organise their own coverage. We have done all we can to warn them of our suspicions and let them handle things on their turf. The rest of the evening, Cora and I rested in our room, enjoying the view from the balcony Cora was on my lap, her head on my chest, my arms around her waist, my right hand playing with her hair. It was peaceful; I was content. The noise of laughter filtered up to us from the men below; they would stay the night here, gear ready and packed on the bikes. Deep down, the tension and excitement for what tomorrow might bring had touched us all in some way Even Scones had made snack bars for the men to take with them, and food that doesn’t need refrigeration. They are going to need it.
In the past, I would have been with them, leading the way, keeping the men in line, but as Oddball said, I have other strengths, and with him out of contact for most of the day, he had little choice but to keep me here and watch over it all. While I wait for the team to complete

their tasks, I will be getting the cells ready for visitors. It won’t take much: new sawdust on the ground, and new ropes for the chair. Things that the furnace can turn to ashes.
It was after midnight when we headed to bed. The evening had been calming, cuddling Cora, her body warm, her soft voice as she spoke of some of her more joyous childhood memories, and I shared a small amount of mine.
Cora’s mind turns to her job tomorrow, her first night running the emergency department alone. She wasn’t as scared as she was worried about how the other staff would react to her coming in and taking over. Bluey had talked several times about how terrible new people were. Some had illusions of a quiet night, relaxing behind a desk, while others tried to bully the other staff, just because they were in charge. I could understand Cora’s worry; the staff hadn’t had a good time with the new bosses and might have negative expectations, so they might not give Cora a chance to show she was different.
All Cora could do was walk in and do what she was good at, and put patients first. The few days she had been there before giving her compassionate leave may work in her favour, if Bluey was feeling threatened by Cora’s style, other staff might see her in a positive light. I tried to tell Cora this, to ease her mind, but she was still a bit nervous.
A group of bikes starting up woke me in the morning; we had not closed the balcony door, and the sound drifted in. I snuck out of bed, leaving Cora to sleep as long as she could. Close the balcony door, dress quickly and head down to talk to the guys before they leave.
“Remember, keep in contact, let me know if anything changes, be polite to the service station manager, we might need his co-operation. Stay low, and watch. We need proof; take photos, anything that may look incriminating.” Oddball was shouting out his final orders before the men left. I shook all the men’s hands before they mounted their bikes and left.
I was filled with mixed emotions.
“Don’t worry, they will be fine, they are the best we have at this. I have our hostage van going, to be arriving not long after the suspect van arrives at the place we think he will camp for the night. The other is doing the same in the other direction. Relax, Gunner, you can’t be everywhere; you have to trust they do their job, just like the rest of us.” It was as if Oddball was reading my mind, or my emotions were that obvious on my face. We have known each other since birth; there’s little we can hide from each other.
“A lot going on brother, the move, these men we are sending out, putting them in danger, Cora starting night shift, her birth father coming on Friday, so much in a short time, then you have those two still in hospital, it doesn’t look good for her ex best friend, she is going down hill fast, and the ex boyfriend, he will have a long road to recovery, but is hanging in there. Scrubs says that Paul had been taken away by the funeral directors, and heard that the uncle had returned home. We still don’t know if the uncle has stopped trying to hurt Cora, or if burying

his son slows it down, while he makes his next move.” I was very worried about her uncle, he doesn’t know that Cora has learned he was not her father, but that won’t take long before he finds out. When her father visits, I am positive he has spies around, maybe watching her father’s movements, not necessarily here in town yet, but who knows.
*1 hear you, brother. I wish there were something I could do to reduce your burden. The best! can do is have our friends keep an eye on the uncle, and find out what he’s doing, and keep us informed if he looks like he was moving to hard Cora, his hurt and anger would be high, and where he is tunneling that anger is unfounded, and stupid, we all know that Cora told them to leave, it was their choice to linger. They should never have come here in the first place.” Oddball was right, and if he can have ears to the ground around the uncle, that might give us some warning
Cora didn’t deserve any of this.
