Chapter 95
Gunner POV
The staff saw me as a boss too, which saved me from having to push to get things done; they gladly took my requests and did them. Such a relief; it would have been a headache to ask Cora to tell the staff I was in charge, which would have made me look weaker. One thing I hate the most is looking weak in front of anyone.
Cora and Demetri have both appeared lost in their staring contest, looking at each other from head to toe, so close that you can clearly see they are family. Cora has many of her father’s features, and I chuckled softly when they both moved at the same time, almost mimicking each other, wondering if they even know they share the same habits and actions. If you didn’t know better, you could swear they grew up together and formed these little twitches and habits.
Now I am rambling.
Demetri left to get changed, and our evening suddenly changed again.
“I left your personal items for you to put away. How do you feel now? You have your father here. Does it
feel real yet?” Cora had not talked much, and that bothered me. This was not the woman I knew; she was
never this shy. It was almost as if she were fighting inside, trying to decide something big.
“The barbecue with all staff should be good, will also give Demetri a chance to see them too, those ladies
you have the phones of, anything worth having on them?” Cora knows me well.
“Nothing worth talking about will give them back after we decide if we keep them on staff, and what Demetri and you decide regarding revealing your status.” Once everyone knows that Cora is related to Demetri, her life might change again. Being in the spotlight will be different; she was already embarrassed
at the attention from the council.
“Tonight, after the barbecue, we can discuss it. I understand that my life just changed again, so much has happened in such a short time. How’s Oddball taking the news of him becoming a father?” Cora changed
I the subject, making it clear she didn’t want to talk about it yet.
“He’s excited and scared at the same time. Strike wants them to move out, find their own place.” I shrugged. What more could I add?
“Tell Oddball he can move in here for now, while he looks for a place, that might take the pressure off him, because Strike will nag until they move out.
“I will pass that on, have to see him in the morning, we have two men we believe are shooters in the cells, the capture went smoothly. Oddball wanted them to spend a night in the chairs before we had a nice little chat with them.” I chuckled as I spoke, knowing the kind of night they would be having.
“Good, that’s a start. We need to dig deeper into the company, they may know more or be part of it. Any news on the gun clubs?” Cora was not going to let all this go; she’s invested in a solution. Maybe she does
Chapter 95-
have a little guilt over losing Paul and Sally–Anne, and, with Jake, if he lives, has a long road to recovery ahead of him. I worry that she will see Jake, feel sorry for him and go back to him because of the accident. I hope I am wrong and that she chooses me, because it would gut me knowing she returned to that cheater. I can’t comment yet; I’ll wait this one out and show her every day I am the better choice. “Nothing yet on the gun club, we had been focusing on capturing the men, we will look deeper as of today.”
“Do you want me at the interviews?”
“No, not a place for a lady.” I would fight Cora on this one.
“Okay, I didn’t really want to be in there, facing the men that might have been the killers of….. No wait, they died in a spot that was not where either of those two went, we’re still missing some.”
“The other club is capturing them. We sent them the delivery van itinerary and suggestions. They will get back to us tomorrow with how they went, as those delivery vans will take a little longer to reach the spot
when the shootings occur.” I replied before I noticed that Demetri was back.
“What killings? What delivery vans?” Demetri asked as he strode in, followed by two of his men, all of
whom had thunderous looks on their faces. Demetri no longer looked like the billionaire, wearing jeans, a
shirt, and runners, a very casual look for him.
Cora and I spent the next two hours explaining the shootings, how we had reached the point of capturing some men, and Cora offered her laptop to show the spreadsheets. Demetri asked questions, and we
answered the best we could.
Demetri took out his phone and texted someone at least three times during those two hours. His phone pinged a few times, but he didn’t look at his phone once when it pinged, giving us all his attention. Demetri, having heard and seen enough, checked his phone/
“The company is under investigation; it appears they have been transporting drugs and guns around the countryside. You have stumbled on a sting, but the ones you have taken in are not the good guys; that’s
something at least.”
Demetri went on to explain what the undercover men were doing and how long this had been going on.
Demetr We were right regarding the gun club, but they were still gathering information. Demetri wanted to be there when we talked to the men in the cells.
“Oddball needs to clear that.” Cora jumped in.
“Then get the clearance, I don’t want innocent men hurt because you have taken the law into your own hands. Have you spoken to your local police department?”
We then went into detail about our local constabulary and how useless they were, about what Cora sent to the council, and everyone she could think of. The pride on Demetri’s face was evident, earning him another tick on my approval list. I called Oddball, and he said he would come over. He wanted to see the new house and would bring Strike with him.
