Chapter 96
Cora POV
After the three ladies were escorted off the property, the rest became more social and careful. Gunner was going to send their phones back to the three ladies later, after Demetri and I had discussed announcing our relationship so that no one could cash in on that snippet of news. Demetri said he had already had his PR team working on an announcement, but will talk more later.
Oddball arrived, looking every bit the club leader, which started more whispers behind hands, but this time, we didn’t care what they said; it was most likely true. We are club members, and the sooner they accept that, the better for them. All these people had signed their agreement.
We enjoyed the barbecue and getting to know the staff in a more felaxed environment, now that they had gotten used to Oddball and Demetri being here. I get it, I really do. I was that way when I met a top–level surgeon. I was all fangirl on him; he was kind and gently put me back in my place, so I got the staff looking at us that way, more my dad than me, but as they started to realise who he was to me, they started to look
at me differently too.
After I had spent enough time getting to know the staff, Demetri, Oddball, Strike, Gunner, and I moved to
my office, where we would discuss our situation in private. The staff had been informed that, when we were in the office, they should not bother us. Two guards stood outside the door, just to be sure. We don’t
yet know the staff well enough to trust them.
The meeting started with Oddball and Demetri discussing the shooters, the plan, and how to move forward. Demetri phoned someone in a high position in the force, and after he finished the call, they continued to talk about more they could do; it sounds almost as if we were now part of the undercover operation. The men we have in the cells, this man wanted Demetri to report back on what they found out, the man wants to receive the information we had discovered, and was willing to share what they had, with our sad experience with the forces, it was on the word of Demetri, that the information would be shared, that Oddball agreed, and told Demetri that he only agreed because he was my father. Family should be trusted, but if he shafted them, he would not be well received in the club.

“Oddball, as Strike is with a child on the way, how would you like to move in here until you find a place of your own? We have plenty of room. We get along well, and are in a good position, between town and the clubhouse.” I offer sincerely, it might do Strike good to be away from the club.
Strike squealed with excitement.
“Oddy, please, please say yes.” Strike begged Oddball, it was the first time I had heard Strike call Oddball, ‘Oddy‘. I smiled, managing to stop the giggle that was trying to rise out of me at her cute name.
“Are you sure, Cora? You just moved in and met your father; all this is new. Do you really want us to move in and disrupt your life even more?”
“Yes, I am sure, you have a lot going on, it would be better for Strike to be here away from the everyday

stresses of the clubhouse, Strike can go on Friday and Saturday nights, party time, but the rest of the week
stay here, resting, better for her health and the babies health, and I can keep an eye on her, ensure she was behaving the best for the baby.” I offered that I wasn’t here all the time, but here she would have some peace, and the security was good, with Demetri here to upgrade it all, having offered to check it out and get any issues we might be missing dealt with.
“Thank you. Strike still wants to teach the little ones; it would be good not to mark schoolwork at the clubhouse. We will take you up on that offer, some peace, whilst we look for something that suits our needs.” Strike was dancing about, like a child who just won a race.
“Tomorrow, I’ll start packing,” Strike announced confidently.
That being settled, Oddball and Strike said their goodbyes, with Gunner and Demetri both going to the clubhouse tomorrow to talk to the visitors in the cells.
Demetri brought out a box, and inside were loose photos. He never got around to putting them in an
album, saying it was too painful to look at them, but he will try to explain them to me as we went through
the box. I got comfortable on the lounge, the box on the table, and the tea trolley arrived, with coffee and
cakes. Why it was still called a tea trolley when there was no tea on it was beyond me; I guess they didn’t
like to call it a coffee or cake trolley.
The first few pictures were of my mother in her teens, at the same school, in study groups, and with other friends. In a group photo, Demetri explained who all the people were, and then graduation and award nights. Before the more romantic ones started to appear, Demetri and his mother snuggled together, some of them kissing, others just laughing and having fun. They did look like the perfect couple.
“Dianne was the most beautiful, kind–hearted woman I have ever met. Always the peacemaker, the ear for others‘ woes in the group, I broke my heart letting her go and losing you in the process. I was too young to be a father, according to my parents. I learned years later, when a group of us were chatting, that my mother approached your mother and tried to pay her off, get rid of the baby, and would never allow us to marry. Dad sent me to another country on business during the school holidays. Your mother was supposed to wait for me, but when I returned, she was gone. I sent letters, trying to explain that my parents were forcing us apart, and when your mother never responded, I caved in and did as my parent asked. That hardly lasted long; I couldn’t stand the woman and never bedded her, only kissed her on the wedding day, on the cheek.”

“We read some of those letters; they didn’t paint a pretty picture of you. I understand being under the influence of your parents, having had a bad time with my uncle. They can be very persuasive. My mother’s heart was broken; she never dated, never went out, stayed home and ran that business from her office. My uncle tried to influence all her decisions, to have him as the executor of her will, and to give him everything. It was not till she was gone that he learned what little he got.”
“That shooting was too convenient. I looked at the footage; the gunman could have shot anyone, but he chose your mother, waited till she came to the front with her shopping trolley, not knowing it was being held up, and he raised his gun and shot her. It didn’t look random to me. My team is looking into that shooting.” Demetri softly said, as he ran a finger over a photo of my mother, reverently, he still loved her

deeply, you could see it in his eyes, the way he looked at the photo, with deep longing and regret.
“I agree, we had been talking about it, and we have our Hacker, investigating it. He doesn’t have much time with the other work taking up most of it, but he’s good at his job.” Gunner took some of the photos and looked through them.
“My man will pull up everything, and if you give me Hacker’s details, they can liaise together.” Demetri offered as he gently placed the photo back in the box.
