Chapter 97

Demetri POV

Cora is a beautiful, kind woman, just like her mother was.

Loves deeply and hurts deeply, but as loyal as they come.

Gunner sounds perfect for her. He has been in the room a few times when we have talked, and I can see just by looking at him, as he sits quietly and lets Cora talk and support her when we talk about some rough stuff, that he was there for her long term, smitten, like I was with her mother. Gunner looks like he won’t be easily bullied into giving her up, like I was, but then at seventeen, I was still a young hormoneraging kid, who didn’t know what he lost till she was gone from his life.

What has happened to her over the years was sickening to hear, and I know she has only skimmed the surface of what her life has been like. We will talk more when I get there, and I am looking forward to getting to know my daughter, not this over the phone or internet FaceTime, but really see her, and if she permits, touch her, hold her, feel her in my arms, then

it will be real.

I have put the uncle and family history in the hands of my best investigation team, they are good, and will dig up every thing, and fast, for me it was already taking too long, I want to know now, today, but thinks take time, and the more dangerous the person is, the deeper to you have to dig, as they have had years to hid the skeletons. Still, sooner or later, they will be found. You can guarantee it.

Today was the day I had packed enough clothes and everything I needed to be away from home or the office for at least a month. If Cora and I bond quickly, I intend to make her home my main place of residence, if she will have me.

I haven’t been this nervous since I was a young man when I was forced to marry a woman that I hated, watching her beaming smile, wide like she had won the lottery. Well, she was in for a big surprise when she found out I won’t be touching her and restricting what she can spend. I heard her and her father talking a week before the wedding. My parents paid the family a lot of money for this to happen; they were in dire need of cash, their business was failing, and I was the price for that money. The marriage was a guarantee they would repay the money; I can call it collateral damage. I had the presence of mind to pull out my phone and record what I could; that was before I heard the truth, but I had already started recording anything I could. They taught me to trust no one, and that included them. Glad I listened to that advice/

So, I got married, in name only. My wife and I argued every day; she hated being in separate

rooms, and I wouldn’t let her touch me, and she was only with me on my arms for appearance’s sake at parties when I had to attend. It didn’t take long for her to start cheating. I had a private investigator whose job was to keep track of and record her every second of every day. Ten years I let it happen, ten long years, and when she arrived announcing she was carrying the heir, I brought out all the evidence against her, and stripped that family apart, and shredded them. Divorce was quick, quiet, and brutal; the prenup cost her and the family big time.

Even played the evidence of that day, when I heard them talking about using me, mum and dad had no defence to that recording, it shocked them, and it shattered our already fragile existence. I was now supporting myself financially, didn’t need a cent from them, and that was when I tried to find Dianne. Still, when I found she was living with a man, I died a little more inside and left them alone. I wish I had investigated back then, because I would have persuaded Dianne and made her mine.

My men were looking forward to meeting Cora. I brought with me my six most trusted men, and Cora doesn’t know yet, but they will be staying here, her new personal guards. Once the world finds out about her, she will be hunted by the tabloids, who will want photos and news of her. The price you pay when your family is wealthy. But we shall work something out to protect my girl. I might be years too late, but I am here now and not going anywhere.

Not once, since losing Dianne, had I thought of any other woman; yes, a few ladies have been on my arm at galas. Still, none graced my bed, don’t get me wrong, I have bedded ladies, I am a fullblooded man, with urges, but not to the extent the tabloid says, have a place I go to that caters for men like me, that need discretion, and clean ladies. The tabloids are all wrong, woman selling their lies and finding doors suddenly closed on them, yep, I have that much power, it’s what money does, gives you power to open and close doors, working the connections, I have made over the years.

The house came into view; it was large acreage, a huge house for this town. It surprised me when I checked it out on the internet that houses like this existed out of town, or even in this town, which was growing faster than the infrastructure could handle. I am proud of that complaint and the changes Cora suggested for the main park in town. If they take it, that park would be grand. Cora said something about the club making a park too; it sounded good. Especially for the youth, who have little to entertain them, are at awkward ages, stuck between adulthood and not wanting to be called a child anymore.

The house they just bought is perfect, and I am already organising better security. I will get some transportable homes added out the back of this large property, far enough away from the main house to avoid looking imposing, yet close enough to reach it in seconds. Love that it already has a helipad; that was important for me to fly in and out. But this all comes down to Cora and whether she accepts me and the changes I was thinking of. I can’t push too much on her just yet; it was, after all, our first meeting.
