After seeing the elders off, Raelynn and Sebastian were the last to leave. The VIP elevator was empty, leaving just the two of them standing side by side.
Sebastian stared at the digital floor display before slowly shifting his gaze to her. "Do you want to go?"
He was asking if she wanted to attend the hotel's couple's event.
Raelynn understood immediately. When a man asks "Do you want to go?" in that tone, it means "I don't want you to." He was going to coax his girlfriend. He was telling her to know her place and back off.
"Sure, why wouldn't I? Grandma told us to go," Raelynn replied smoothly, pretending she hadn't caught his subtext.
She just wanted to annoy him. Why did he get to dictate everything? Was she just a prop to him? Someone to summon and dismiss at his convenience? Even though she had zero desire to play happy couple games, she couldn't resist calling out his blatant hypocrisy.
Sure enough, Sebastian stared at her for a moment before letting out a dry scoff. "If you don't mind, I can allow you to tag along to see someone else with me."
It was painfully obvious who that "someone else" was.
Raelynn's temple throbbed.
Sebastian had seen right through her bluff and effortlessly fired back. He knew perfectly well she would never willingly follow him just to watch him play house with Seraphina.
The elevator arrived. Sebastian stepped out without a backward glance, completely confident she wouldn't follow.
The doors slid shut again. Only then did Raelynn let out a long breath. In just a few short minutes, she felt as though her lungs were being corroded by toxic air. She didn't rush back to her suite, instead heading down to the lobby for a walk, wanting to soak in the holiday atmosphere alone.
Right on cue, a video call from Lily came through. Her beautiful little face popped onto the screen. "Mama! Happy New Year! Am I the first one to tell you?"
Raelynn couldn't help but smile radiantly. "Of course you are, baby."
It was true—the people who actually loved you always cared about being the 'first' and the 'only'. They didn't act like Sebastian, totally indifferent to rumors about her and Tristan.
"Great-grandpa wants to talk to you too, Mama. I'm letting him borrow you for a few minutes!"
Raelynn's smile deepened. "Okay."
Arthur looked great today, dressed in a red suit, looking incredibly warm and approachable. "Sunny, are you eating well? I'm sorry you aren't with me this year. When you get back, I'll make you your favorite pastries, okay?"
Raelynn nodded obediently.
