That soft laugh was like a needle plunging straight into Raelynn's heart.
Seraphina Vance... had just witnessed her being humiliated and slapped by Brenda Polk.
And she had openly laughed at her.
She also saw Sebastian's utter indifference; he didn't even try to defend her.
Even though Raelynn had long stopped wanting Sebastian, having the other woman who ruined her marriage witness such a pathetic moment still made her feel...

Sebastian cast a cold glance at Brenda, told Seraphina they would talk later, and hung up the call.
His deadpan gaze swept over Raelynn's reddened cheek for a second before landing on Brenda. His voice was freezing. "Aunt Brenda, what is the meaning of this?"
Sebastian didn't immediately ask Raelynn if she was hurt.
Raelynn didn't expect to see a shred of sympathy on his face anyway.
Over the past seven years, she had grown completely accustomed to his apathy.
She had learned to cope with it long ago.
Meeting Sebastian's gaze, Brenda involuntarily shivered.
Raelynn was still his wife, after all.
Striking Raelynn was essentially a slap in Sebastian's face.
Even if he didn't care whether his wife lived or died, his own pride was far more important than Raelynn herself.
Realizing this, Brenda immediately pointed at Raelynn. "Isn't this all Raelynn's fault? The news of you going to the hospital with Seraphina was leaked! And it was the exact hospital where Raelynn works. Who else could it be? The forum post was full of deliberate, filthy slander! They said... they said Seraphina is pregnant with your child! And they said you two..."
Brenda couldn't even bring herself to say it.
She could only glare furiously at Raelynn.
After all, Seraphina was still officially engaged to her son, Cameron!
They hadn't formally discussed calling off the wedding yet.
Wasn't this a public slap in the face to the Second Branch?
How was she supposed to show her face in their social circles now? She would be a laughingstock!
That was why she hated Raelynn for being so useless!

Everyone in the Croix family knew Raelynn couldn't survive without him.
Raelynn despised Brenda's assessment.
But a tragic realization hit her: she couldn't actually refute it.
Because in the past, she truly had devoted herself entirely to Sebastian, throwing all her self-respect out the window.
Sebastian shot Raelynn a sidelong glance.
Ignoring whether she wanted to defend herself, his eyes brushed past her flushed cheek.
He turned to Mary, who had come out after hearing the noise. "Get Mrs. Croix an ice pack."
Startled out of her eavesdropping, Mary rushed to do as she was told.
Sebastian's words forcefully interrupted Raelynn's rising anger.
But in her heart, she felt absolutely nothing toward his "concern."
To her, this wasn't an act of kindness or care; it was just a byproduct of the flawless manners he'd been raised with.

I think for as slow as the beginning was, their turning point is just so fast... really hope we actually get to read about R and S and their rekindle.... we did not read 950 pages for their story to be sidelined. Im for this sideline story, but it if it's to separate from the main characters and their story, please make it separate book....
Author please update more chapters...
I really like Zella, she is becoming a good friend to Raelynn. Ian needs to go. The relationship with Chloe is confusing. Some chapters they are cousins, sometimes they're sibling. A little confusing....
Julians role as big brother- I feel comes from a genuine place, but in a relationship thats is just as stained as Raelynns and Sebastians. It hard for me to connect to his big brother role as he too was such a problem before. And while they talked a little bit, the conversation did not give me the believe there was resolution between Raelynn and Julian. For a brute, he should make his feelings clear about the situation to Raelynn and then step back, until there is more foundation for him to stand on....
Knife in my heart. I hurt for Raelynn. She has made it this far, but how much does she have in her, everyone has a breaking point. Some back of me hopes the author is joking to lighten the mood after so many intense chapters, but thats not this kind of story or couple....
My heart cannot take this. This, cannot be how it ends with these too. They need resolution with each other. Raelynn needs to be more humanize with Sebastian. We know she is hurt, but this is the branch. She needs all these answers, if not for them to be together, then for Lily to have both her parents. Stop with the mind games Raelynn!...
Its like the story is just repeating itself...
Timeline is getting lost for me. So many treasured little memories Raelynn has but yet, he was gone for years ? Anyways... still rooting for them! These two need a heart to heart. Lily "forgetting" someone, not possible in this day and age and I hope thats not their storyline....
Sebastian, the man of few words.... needs to find all the words! Needs to fight for her! On note, seven years seems like a long time for this master plan (which I am sure goes back much farther). Rereading this novel, and it seems like everything has played out in a 5-8 month time span. And I feel like all Sebastian's doings/ plan have not been revealed. I hope we get to see the whole picture and have the resolutions we hope. But seven years of mistreatment, I just don't see Raelynn fully coming back. If these was 2-3 years, maybe, and I know it changes some characters around, but it would still work. Rooting for them!...
