She hesitated for a moment before walking over.
Mary knew that while Raelynn was ignored by her husband, Matilda Croix treated her quite well. Naturally, Mary didn't stick around to eavesdrop, turning to head upstairs to gather the laundry.
"Raelynn?" Matilda's kind voice came through the receiver.
Raelynn checked the time, anxious to grab her books. "Grandma, you're up late."
Matilda chuckled warmly. "My old bones are holding up just fine. I'm learning to be a night owl from you young folks. And besides, with those herbal supplements you always send over, I feel great."
Raelynn waited quietly for her to get to the point.
Sure enough.
Matilda gently steered the conversation to her true goal. "Raelynn, since you know so much about medicine, why don't you prescribe some natural remedies for yourself? You need to prep your body to have a healthy baby. You know the Croix family has always had more boys than girls; it would be wonderful to have a sweet little great-granddaughter. A child would also bring you and Sebastian closer. He actually really loves kids."
The pressure to have a baby had been a constant theme over the years.
She hadn't breathed a word about little Lily's existence.
Now that she was determined to get a divorce, she was even less likely to bring it up.
Even if they weren't divorcing, what good would her taking remedies do?
Sebastian had no interest in intimacy; there was no point in trying.
Furthermore.
Sebastian himself had stated years ago that he would never have children.
Matilda couldn't possibly be unaware of the "infertility" rumors.
Yet here she was, urging Raelynn to take supplements to prepare her body.
It felt as though women in this world were meant to be drained dry, squeezed of everything they had, and then blamed for every trumped-up flaw.
It was incredibly unfair.
But to shut the conversation down right now.
Raelynn clenched her fingers and decided not to hide the truth. "Grandma, I'm planning to divorce Sebastian."
Dead silence met her on the other end.
She was completely shocked.
After a long pause.
Matilda finally spoke, her voice stiff. "I know you've been wronged, Raelynn. Sebastian naturally doesn't know how to love someone, but he still treats you with basic respect. Won't you reconsider?"
"I'm not reconsidering. My mind is made up."
Matilda was quiet for another moment. With a heavy sigh, she immediately made her stance clear. "Raelynn, the Croix family has failed you. Don't worry, even if you divorce, Grandma will make sure you have a safety net. There are plenty of good young men in our circle. If there's someone suitable, I will arrange the rest of your life as quickly as possible."
