Jenna assumed Raelynn was just putting on a brave face. Even though Raelynn didn't look devastated, Jenna's empathetic heart broke for her. "I know it hurts, sweetie. But honestly, whose marriage isn't like this? Take my husband, for example. I just turn a blind eye. The urge to stray is practically baked into their DNA. Don't drive yourself crazy over it. You have to look at the bigger picture."
Raelynn just smiled softly, keeping her thoughts to herself. The truth was, she saw the bigger picture perfectly. She simply refused to spend the rest of her life turning a blind eye, swallowing insults, and settling for a hollow marriage. She would rather burn it all to the ground and start over.
"But you know," Jenna continued, her tone shifting to earnest advice, "ever since the baby came, my husband actually likes coming home. Lynnie, why don't you figure out a way to get pregnant? Once a man has a child, that sense of family responsibility kicks in. It might just be the thing to cut ties with that trash on the side."
A child?
She had already had one. But her daughter would never be a pawn used to trap a man. Nor would she force her child to grow up watching a father who treated loyalty as an option.
"If you want, I can help you out," Jenna offered, leaning in. "My husband has a few bottles of incredible vintage wine. Take one home, get Sebastian to drink it, and who knows? A spark ignites, and nature takes its course."
Jenna genuinely cared and was desperately trying to help.
Raelynn opened her mouth to say they were getting a divorce anyway, but Matilda's strict warning to keep it secret stopped her. She was just trying to find a polite way to decline the 'generous' offer when the distinct click of dress shoes pausing behind her made her heart skip a beat.
She turned her head.
Sebastian stood a few feet away, holding a delicate glass of fruit cocktail that looked utterly ridiculous in his strong grip. It didn't take a genius to guess who he was bringing it to. His dark, impenetrable eyes locked onto her face. Though his expression remained maddeningly blank, Raelynn's lips immediately pressed into a thin line.
A sudden, suffocating wave of frustration washed over her. He had heard everything.
She didn't want him misunderstanding this for even a second! She parted her lips, ready to tell him not to flatter himself, that she would never try to get him drunk to beg for his affection.
