Jenna perfectly understood the suffocating reality of Raelynn's situation. Unlike the rest of their circle, she possessed zero tolerance for the twisted logic that 'the unloved one is the real homewrecker.' While she kept her tone civil, she fully intended to knock Seraphina off her pedestal.
Unsurprisingly, Jenna's direct, public question caused the atmosphere to instantly shift. The men exchanged uneasy glances. In their world, certain relationships were meant to be silently acknowledged, never dragged out into the harsh light of day.
Seraphina bristled with quiet indignation. Did Jenna lack basic social awareness? She was literally hanging onto Sebastian's arm—what more needed to be said? Her mind immediately raced, suspecting Raelynn had been whispering lies and turning Jenna against her.
Sebastian, however, simply lifted his dark gaze. His striking features remained impassive, betraying no discomfort whatsoever.
One of the men quickly scrambled to cut the tension. "Come on, Jenna, isn't it obvious? This is Ms. Vance. Who else holds the special place by Mr. Croix's side?"
Raelynn remained utterly silent. She had long grown numb to the moral bankruptcy of this elite circle. For these men, staying faithful to a marriage seemed to be viewed as a fatal disease.
Knowing full well that none of these men knew what Raelynn actually looked like, Jenna feigned a look of sheer panic. "Oh my god, what am I going to do? I sent an iMessage invite to Mrs. Croix earlier. If she shows up now... won't this be incredibly awkward?"
Seraphina quickly realized that the crowd was completely oblivious to Raelynn's true identity. Still, her expression darkened as she shot a frigid glare at Raelynn, who hadn't said a word. Did Raelynn seriously lack the self-awareness to realize that Sebastian's plus-one could only ever be her? She despised Raelynn's pathetic, underhanded attempts to compete.
"Then you'd better shoot her a text right now and make up an excuse to turn her away at the door," one of the guys suggested, clearly trying to protect Sebastian and Seraphina's evening.
Jenna's face tightened. She and Sebastian were the only ones who knew that the actual Mrs. Croix was standing right there, absorbing every single one of these gut-wrenching insults. She desperately wanted to stand up for Raelynn and rip away Seraphina's smug disguise. But she had to weigh the consequences of challenging Sebastian. In their world, every word carried a heavy price.
