Raelynn had never imagined she'd find herself in a situation this ridiculous. The sheer absurdity of it pulled a sharp, incredulous scoff from her throat. "Are you seriously suggesting that they were working so hard they couldn't control themselves and are hooking up in the office?"
She was so blunt that the assistant nervously rubbed the back of his neck, clearly embarrassed. "Well, you know how young people in love can be. Plus, Ms. Vance is going to be the boss's wife soon anyway, so the company is basically her home. Let me just knock. I promise you won't have to wait long."
A cynical smile played on Raelynn's lips. "Take your time."
This was getting fascinating. Was there a real chance she might walk in on her soon-to-be-ex-husband engaged in a steamy office romance? Her mind immediately raced to the legal implications. If she walked in and recorded the whole thing on her phone, it would be the ultimate leverage. With that kind of evidence, she could force the divorce through on her terms and completely neutralize the Croix family's power over her.
"Ms. Ortiz, you can go in now."
The heavy door swung open, instantly killing her hopes of catching them in the act and playing the role of the unhinged, vengeance-seeking wife.
Raelynn mentally shook her head in mild disappointment. She paused for a beat before stepping gracefully into the sprawling executive suite.
Whether they had quickly made themselves presentable or nothing had happened at all, the massive office looked perfectly professional. Sebastian was seated comfortably behind his imposing mahogany desk. Seraphina stood intimately close to his arm, leaning down slightly as if she had just been whispering in his ear.
The air between them practically hummed with an undeniable, exclusive closeness.
Both of them looked up as she walked in.
Sebastian's dark eyes remained impossibly calm, showing zero reaction to her sudden appearance. "Are you here about the project?"
"I already gave my answer to NexusMind," Seraphina cut in, her tone laced with visible annoyance. "Does rushing medical research magically produce flawless results?"
Raelynn saw right through the deflection. She took a seat on the plush leather guest sofa with total composure and looked Seraphina dead in the eye. "So what you're actually admitting is that your team lacks the competence to maintain a standard schedule, your progress is a disaster, and you expect our company to foot the bill for your failures?"
Raelynn let her gaze drift toward the man sitting behind the desk. Sebastian leaned back in his leather chair, radiating an aura of untouchable wealth and power. He remained silent, letting the scene play out.
Because Sebastian was her ultimate shield.
Having fully assessed Seraphina's complete lack of professionalism, Raelynn's eyes went cold. "Since you're so determined to cast me as the villain, it would be a shame to disappoint you. You have two options: either hand over the testing data by the end of the day, or NexusMind will officially submit a request to Kingsford University to have you replaced as team lead."
At that, Sebastian's eyes narrowed slightly as his gaze shifted to Raelynn.
Seraphina's face twisted in fury. "Who the hell do you think you are to make that call?"
Raelynn met her anger with maddening calmness. "Mr. Croix might enjoy doing charity work to fund your ego, but NexusMind isn't going to burn through millions of dollars and critical manpower just to play your games."
