Raelynn's vision was a blur. Driven by pure survival instinct, she clung desperately to her rescuer.
The arm wrapped securely around her waist was rock-solid and unyielding.
In a split second, she broke the surface.
Oxygen rushed violently into her burning lungs.
Black spots danced across her vision. The traumatic memories paralyzed her brain, leaving her violently trembling.
"Raelynn?"
A cold, magnetic voice rang in her ears.
She had already been carried out of the pool.
Her head throbbed agonizingly. She forced her eyes open into a narrow slit and caught sight of Sebastian Croix's sharp, defined jawline.
Water dripped steadily from his dark hair. His expression was completely composed. He swiftly snatched a towel from a nearby lounge chair and wrapped it tightly around her shivering body.
Her lungs burned like fire. She was already fighting a cold, and inhaling the pool water made her feel like she was burning up from the inside out.
Her limbs were completely limp.
Sebastian scooped her into his arms and carried her out with long, purposeful strides.
He moved fast.
But his hold was incredibly steady, shielding her from any jarring movements.
"Mr. Croix? Who is that?"
While they waited for the elevator.
Raelynn heard someone call out to him.
It sounded like Luke Sterling.
But Sebastian didn't even break his stride. He simply pulled the edge of the towel up to cover her face.
They reached the top-floor presidential suite.
Raelynn felt terribly nauseous. Sebastian kicked the bathroom door open, set her down on the vanity counter, and stepped back. She immediately threw off the towel, gripped the edge of the sink, and retched.
Her stomach and lungs were on fire.
Water still dripped from Sebastian's dark hair.
He watched her suffer in silence, simply raising a hand to pat her back gently.
Catching her breath, Raelynn felt the warm, rhythmic pressure of his palm against her spine.
She gripped the counter and looked at him.
His dark eyes were deep and unreadable, like ink spilled into water.
