The air in the room froze for two seconds.
Raelynn felt an incredibly strange vibe between them.
Without looking at Sebastian again, she turned to Ian. "Let's go."
Ian broke eye contact. "Alright."
Lily looked at Sebastian and spoke politely. "Thank you, Mister."
Her Mommy and Professor Finch had taught her to always be polite.
She had seen this man shield her mom, and he had just stopped Shane from pushing her. She felt he deserved a thank you.
Hearing the sweet 'Mister,' a faint ripple crossed Sebastian's dark eyes.
Raelynn and Ian nodded their goodbyes and headed for the exit.
They hadn't gone far when another gasp echoed from behind them.
Followed by Seraphina's panicked scream. "Sebastian?!"
Raelynn's steps faltered for a fraction of a second, but she never looked back.
-
After dropping Lily back at Professor Finch's house with Ian.
It was late by the time Raelynn returned to the house she shared with Sebastian.
She was still wearing Ian's jacket and needed to wash it.
Her own clothes were ruined as well. She took a shower and collapsed into bed.
Sebastian didn't come home that night.
Raelynn didn't ask about it. Demanding to know his whereabouts was no longer her right.
The next day.
A rare Sunday off.
By the time Raelynn woke up, a call had already come in from The Croix Family estate.
Mary handed her the phone.
Raelynn now dreaded any conversation with Matilda Croix, but she gritted her teeth and answered.
"How did Sebastian get injured? How did it get so bad that he had to be hospitalized?!"
Raelynn pressed her lips together. She knew there was no getting out of it.
Ever since she started focusing on her career and distancing herself from The Croix Family, she hadn't cooked any healing broths.
But she knew herbal ingredients better than anyone, and knew exactly how to maximize their restorative properties. That was exactly why, over the years, she had been treated like the family's personal nutritionist, constantly ordered to brew soups for her mother-in-law, aunts, and extended relatives to keep them all in peak condition.
Raelynn threw together a Medicinal Chicken Pot, choosing a recipe that wouldn't take all day.
Mary packed it into a thermos and handed her the room number.
Carrying the container, Raelynn had no choice but to head to the hospital. Playing along was the only way to appease the Matriarch.
When she arrived at the hospital.
She made her way to the VIP ward and stopped in front of his door.
She knocked.
Just as she was about to push it open.
A scoff echoed behind her as someone stared at the 'loving' thermos in her hand.
"There's really no need for the desperate housewife act. I don't think anyone here needs you throwing yourself at them."
