Raelynn's footsteps faltered.
She stared at the message, bewildered.
She immediately dialed his number.
Whatever he was doing on the other end, Preston didn't pick up.
Raelynn quickly texted back: *What happened? Is it serious?*
While waiting for a reply, Raelynn watched the hotel's hospitality managers greeting a stream of guests, all bearing ridiculously expensive gifts.
Some were extravagant tributes for the Croix family's anniversary, while others were personal birthday presents for Sebastian.
Everyone was playing the high-society game to perfection.
Desperately trying to score brownie points with the undisputed heir to the Croix empire.
Raelynn had actually thought about this before she came.
In the past, she had organized Sebastian's birthdays herself, a reflection of a devoted wife's duty and profound love. Now, she had successfully removed herself from the equation. She was like a stranger, feeling absolutely nothing. She wasn't going to expend an ounce of effort on him, not even for appearances.
Her thoughts were interrupted by Preston's reply.
Preston: *I'll explain when I get there. I'm already on my way to the gala.*
Raelynn decided not to press further.
She walked through the doors and headed straight for the guest registry.
Every arriving guest was required to sign in.
"Ms. Ortiz, correct? And which company or family are you representing tonight?" the reception manager asked politely.
Raelynn understood the confusion. Her status as Sebastian's wife had been kept a secret for seven years; stepping into a place like this made her look like a complete outsider.
She answered without missing a beat, "NexusMind Technologies, Raelynn Ortiz."
She represented no one but herself.
The manager noted her down.
Raelynn thought for a moment before asking, "Excuse me, has Mr. Croix arrived yet?"
She had no intention of staying at an event like this for long.
