Raelynn let out a light laugh, raw mockery gleaming in her eyes. "You don't want to make an enemy of Sebastian, but you're also attracted to me. So you choose to put me down, lecture me, and humiliate me, hoping to break my confidence. Mr. Sterling, why do you do this to yourself?"
She threw his own words right back at him.
And in a way that left him utterly humiliated.
Luke was stunned. He stared fixedly at Raelynn's breathtakingly gorgeous face—devoid of any vulnerability, brimming instead with icy composure and sharp thorns.
It struck him so hard his heart began to pound violently against his ribs.
A burning flush crept up his neck.
He had never met a woman so...
"Raelynn, you..." He stammered, entirely unprompted.
The harsh insults died in his throat.
Raelynn smiled, though it was the kind of smile that made a person want to flinch. "Mr. Sterling, I really dislike idiots, and I dislike you."
Luke's racing heart practically flatlined.
Raelynn had been blunt in the past, but she had never been this openly vicious. This was a flat-out, humiliating rejection.
A myriad of colors flashed across his handsome face.
She was drawing a definitive line in the sand, rejecting him so effortlessly that it stripped away every ounce of his dignity.
He nearly choked on his own breath. Catching sight of something in his periphery, he scrambled to reclaim his pride. "You're overthinking it. I just wanted to mess around a bit. It's not like I'm desperate for you. As for you, try not to cry too hard. Mr. Croix just walked in with his girlfriend. Try to hold it together, alright?"
Raelynn paused.
She turned around to look.
A crowd had already swarmed near the entrance.
At the center of the throng stood Sebastian and Seraphina.
Sebastian wore his usual aura of cold indifference, his eyes completely devoid of warmth.
But Raelynn's mind buzzed with a sudden clarity.
But as luck would have it, those words fell perfectly on the ears of Seraphina and Leo Flynn as they strolled over.
Seraphina's already radiant smile grew even brighter.
She greeted Luke warmly. "Mr. Sterling, you made it."
Raelynn could tell Seraphina had heard every word. The woman's face was practically glowing with the arrogance of the deeply favored.
Seraphina smiled. "Sebastian got pulled away. Let's all catch up a bit later?"
Luke didn't refuse.
He watched Raelynn from the corner of his eye, desperately hoping to spot a crack of heartbreak on her face.
"Sounds great. I'll go say hello to some folks first." Luke felt he had said enough. As far as he was concerned, Raelynn should have realized her place by now.
The moment Luke walked away.
Leo shrugged at Raelynn. "Honestly, you shouldn't have come. It's a massive day, and Sera is already here. In what capacity do you think you belong?"
