The cool, smooth texture of the jade against his palm made Sebastian Croix look down.
The sheer size of the stone, combined with its flawless clarity, told him instantly that its market value was virtually immeasurable.
Raelynn Ortiz glanced over as well.
Her family's antique shop was filled with incredible pieces. If it hadn't been, Silas Vance wouldn't have brought those transfer papers to her mother's hospital bed, forcing her thumbprint onto the documents while she was comatose from the car crash.
It was the Winslow family's antiques that had saved Silas during his worst financial crisis.
Raelynn treasured everything in this shop. She immediately reached out, took the jade pendant from Sebastian's hand, and carefully placed it back into the display case.
The wooden cabinet was old and slightly worn from years of neglect.
She securely fastened the small padlock on the outside.
In this single display case alone, ten top-tier jade pieces rested.
Each one was breathtaking.
Sebastian watched the sheer reverence with which she handled the item. His gaze slowly shifted from Raelynn's face to the jade she had just locked away. His eyes betrayed no emotion. He stared at it for a couple of seconds before lazily looking away.
He didn't bring up the "negotiation" they had been discussing moments earlier.
As Raelynn stood up straight, he turned and walked out.
Through the tapestry, Raelynn watched him walk straight over to Seraphina Vance. She couldn't hear what he said, but Seraphina's eyes curved into a sweet smile before the two of them walked off together.
Raelynn, however, couldn't find a single reason to smile.
Sebastian had left no room for negotiation.
He was getting even. This was his way of retaliating because she had refused to give Seraphina face or pull the data from Longstride Technologies to help her out.
Raelynn lowered her head and took a deep, steadying breath.
"Watch your mouth!"
"If you hadn't stubbornly refused to hand over the Longstride data, I wouldn't have had to rush the paperwork to set up this exhibition. You've exhausted everyone with your selfishness! You're completely unreasonable!"
The antique shop had technically been sold to Sebastian.
But the paperwork had been stalled for ages. With Seraphina's latest scandal, they needed the shop as an emergency PR anchor, forcing Silas to pull every shady string he had over the last two days to expedite the transfer.
After all, the way he had stolen the business from Raelynn's mother had been underhanded, involving plenty of illegal procedures. Now, he was being forced to clean up his own messy trail.
Raelynn had no idea why Silas was throwing a tantrum over processing some standard paperwork.
She tuned him out entirely.
But Silas threw one last jab at her back: "Being Sebastian's wife gets you absolutely nothing. He'll never appreciate you. But if you step aside and let your sister take your place, the dynamic changes entirely."
