They decided not to let it ruin their mood.
"We'll wait for the university's official statement on Raelynn," Leo said. "For now, let's just celebrate Sera finishing her interviews."
Julian glanced back over his shoulder one last time, a nagging feeling settling in his chest. His grandmother had never mentioned pulling strings for Raelynn. The math just wasn't adding up.
Meanwhile, Raelynn was stuck in a faculty meeting to finalize the interview scores. The grading process was highly efficient. After reviewing the final roster, she couldn't help but glance across the table at Dr. Adrian Moreno, who was calmly reading through a dissertation.
Adrian caught her eye. "What are you looking at me for? Surprised by the results?"
She wasn't surprised at all. Adrian had three doctoral slots to fill, and he hadn't given a single one to Seraphina Vance. She was officially rejected.
The results were already posted online. Seraphina probably knew by now.
Raelynn's intuition proved correct. As she and Adrian headed toward the dining hall, they ran straight into the very group she expected.
Seraphina looked sick. Leo had thrown a party to celebrate her supposed victory since he had plenty of free time after his recent corporate demotion. Mid-party, Seraphina had eagerly checked the university portal, only to find her name missing from the accepted list.
She couldn't believe it. She had been rejected.
But she wasn't going to take it lying down. She needed answers. She just hadn't expected to run into Raelynn so soon. Normally, outsiders couldn't easily access the campus, but Sebastian's status had gotten them past security.
Sebastian's gaze briefly flicked over Raelynn before settling on the man beside her.
"Director Moreno," Seraphina said, taking a deep breath to steady herself. "Could I have a word?"
Adrian stopped and looked at her. "Go ahead."
"Why wasn't I selected?" Seraphina asked. She shot a deliberate look at Raelynn before continuing. "Was there a grading error? My academic scores more than exceeded the baseline."
In short, she was asking if someone had intentionally tanked her evaluation.
Adrian's words were ruthless. He had publicly dismantled her carefully crafted image, exposing the truth: she had gone overseas because she couldn't cut it locally.
The reality was simple. He didn't think she was good enough, and she hadn't earned the spot.
A crowd of passing students had already stopped to watch, murmuring among themselves and casting mocking glances her way. The humiliation threatened to swallow her whole.
Clenching her fists, Seraphina abruptly turned her desperation toward Raelynn, who had been watching in silence.
"And what about Raelynn?" Seraphina demanded. "How exactly did she earn her professorship? Can she justify her position to the public?"
Raelynn blinked. Was Seraphina seriously trying to drag her into this dumpster fire?
Sebastian's dark eyes slid lazily over to Raelynn.
Adrian let out a harsh laugh. "You couldn't even compete with your own batch of candidates, yet you have the audacity to question Raelynn? The university's first Professor of Exceptional Merit in over a decade?"
