The moment Seraphina stepped inside her house, she grabbed a decorative vase and hurled it against the wall, her chest heaving as it shattered into pieces.
Her eyes were red with humiliation. She was shaking with pure rage.
They still hadn't figured out exactly how Raelynn had secured the professorship, but the sheer weight of that honor was crushing Seraphina entirely.
And now, the Croix family's attitude had instantly pivoted.
Matilda Croix had finally started warming up to her, but now Raelynn was the toast of high society. The elite were flocking to the Croix estate to curry favor, and Matilda wanted to throw a massive banquet to tether Raelynn's success directly to the family's name.
It would only make Raelynn more untouchable.
And where did that leave her?
"What on earth is going on?" Blanche rushed into the entryway.
"Raelynn..." Seraphina choked out, wiping her eyes. "She's completely blocking my path!"
With Cameron's prison release looming over her head, she still hadn't solidified her place within the Croix family. She quickly filled Blanche in on Raelynn's sudden rise to power.
Blanche's face hardened. "Who the hell is backing her? She was just a glorified ER doctor. That new drug was published under her name, but everyone knows it was just compensation from NexusMind. What actual skills does she have?"
"I don't know!" Seraphina snapped, shutting her eyes tightly. "She hasn't left a single trace!"
It was a calculated move. Raelynn had deliberately stayed silent, letting Seraphina make a fool of herself during the interview before swooping in to steal the spotlight and regain the Croix family's approval.
If this continued, Seraphina's future was doomed.
A vicious glint appeared in Blanche's eyes. "We have to find a way to knock her down a peg. We can't stay on the defensive like this. Don't worry, I'll figure something out."
Over the next two days, Raelynn barely had time to breathe.
She was fielding over a dozen dinner invitations a day. A twenty-seven-year-old professor at Kingsford was a massive disruption to the industry's status quo.
Raelynn checked the calendar, her face lighting up with genuine excitement. "I'll be waiting for you."
The thought of finalizing her divorce and officially updating Lily's legal guardianship gave her a massive rush of endorphins.
Hearing the joy in her voice, Ian could practically picture her smiling.
"The Hudson Resort is hosting its grand opening gala this weekend," Ian said. "If you're up for it, I'd love to combine it with a celebration banquet for you. Consider it a toast to you finally becoming Lily's legal mother."
Raelynn paused, thinking of Matilda Croix's relentless attempts to organize a party.
If she let Ian host it, she would completely sever the Croix family's ability to capitalize on her success. It would be the ultimate public declaration of her independence.
"If it's not too much trouble for you, I'd love that," Raelynn agreed.
"Honestly, the Hudson family is the one benefiting here," Ian replied smoothly, making sure she didn't feel indebted. "Having you there brings excellent PR to the resort. I'm the one cashing in."
