Sebastian turned away, his eyes lowered as he pondered something. "I'll find another way. Leave it to me."
Seraphina nodded gratefully, her voice softening. "Thank you. You're the only one I can rely on."
They climbed into his waiting car. Before closing the door, Sebastian cast one last, indecipherable look toward the Kingsford campus.
The official announcement of Raelynn's title sent shockwaves through the industry.
NexusMind Technologies and Longstride Technologies suddenly found themselves at the center of a massive corporate frenzy. Their phones rang off the hook as investors and partners clamored for meetings. Within just forty-eight hours, Raelynn's surgical robotics division signed contracts for dozens of new units.
Her academic elevation served as the ultimate, indisputable marketing campaign.
Even Longstride Technologies, which had previously suffered through patent scandals, saw its stock prices surge. The influx of massive partnership deals effectively doubled their revenue in days.
Preston Moreno was swamped with the sudden boom in business. Though they hadn't publicly advertised Raelynn as the lead developer for the surgical robots, her reputation preceded her.
"Everyone understands the sheer weight of being Kingsford's youngest Professor of Exceptional Merit," Preston told her over the phone. "They figure you're on a fast track to the top of the medical field, so buying your tech now is just a way to get their foot in the door with you."
The industry wasn't stupid. A twenty-seven-year-old professor at a top-tier institution was guaranteed to make global waves.
As a result, Raelynn was inundated with calls. Eventually, she stopped answering altogether, exhausted by the endless stream of congratulations from people whose names she barely remembered.
During the chaos, her phone lit up with a call from the Croix family estate.
She stared at the screen for a few seconds, then muted it.
She didn't answer.
Across the city, Sebastian walked out of Croix Holdings. As he approached his car, his phone buzzed with a call from Matilda Croix.
He stopped and answered.
The Matriarch's tone was sharp and irritated. "Did you know about Raelynn's new position beforehand?"
"What do you think?" Sebastian countered smoothly.
Sebastian's dark eyes betrayed nothing.
After hanging up, he got into the car.
Seraphina was sitting in the back seat, her face ghostly pale in the dim interior. She had heard everything.
Matilda Croix had completely flipped her stance. The power dynamic between Seraphina and Raelynn had just violently reversed.
Even though Sebastian hadn't explicitly agreed to bring Raelynn back for a grand banquet, the fact that the Matriarch wanted to publicly claim her was terrifying.
Sebastian glanced in the rearview mirror. "What's wrong?"
Seraphina shook her head stiffly. "Nothing."
She lowered her gaze, a tempest of panic and jealousy raging in her chest. She couldn't just sit back and let this happen.
