Sebastian's lips parted slightly, his eyes a pitch-black void.
But Raelynn wasn't finished. "We're even. I never stood in the way of you and Seraphina, and I happily gave up my spot for her. Likewise, you have absolutely no right to police my life."
She didn't mind throwing gasoline onto the fire of his misunderstanding.
He was the one who asked "Whose is it?" first. She was just playing along.
It was for the best. Let him think exactly that.
She didn't care if he despised her. All that mattered was that even if he eventually discovered Lily was hers, this fabricated "betrayal" would ensure he kept his distance.
Sebastian stared deeply at the reckless defiance etched into her face.
He took another step toward her, his voice steeped in ice. "Tell me. Who is he, and where have you hidden the child?"
Overwhelmed by his predatory aura, Raelynn instinctively backed away.
She hadn't expected him to be so relentlessly fixated on getting answers.
She gritted her teeth. "Why should I tell you? What, are you going to seek revenge?"
He locked onto her defensive posture and her flushed, furious eyes.
After several seconds of silence, he spoke, enunciating every single word. "You could have just told me earlier. I might have even stepped aside and let you be with him."
Even though Raelynn had weathered enough heartbreak to make her bulletproof.
Hearing those words still felt like a physical blow.
Because with that one sentence, he had entirely invalidated all her years of devotion.
He was telling her that she had never meant a thing to him. That he could have handed her off to another man at any moment, tossing her aside like a burdensome piece of luggage.
"Does Ian know?" Sebastian asked. "Though I suppose he wouldn't mind. It's only fair, right? You both share a similar past—both bringing a child into the mix."
Raelynn remained completely silent.
Sebastian mirrored her silence for a moment.
Then he continued, "You don't need to guard against me. I wouldn't stoop so low as to do anything to a child. If we ever met, I might even write them a generous check. I wouldn't tell them how their mother gave birth to them while legally married to someone else."
He hadn't even raised his voice. His pitch remained perfectly even and controlled.
