Raelynn heard the underlying message loud and clear.
It was a declaration of absolute indifference.
He was showing her, without a shred of hesitation, just how utterly heartless he could be.
She wanted to tell him that he didn't have to go to such lengths. She had stopped expecting anything from him long ago. Whatever cruel things he said simply blew past her like the wind, no longer capable of causing ripples in her heart.
Sebastian didn't say another word.
Her refusal to explain, paired with her deliberate provocations, seemed to draw a final, permanent line under their relationship.
There was no point in fighting anymore.
He stepped past her and walked away without looking back.
He stopped demanding to know who the other man was, and he abandoned his pursuit of where she had hidden the child.
Once again, they parted ways in a toxic haze of bitterness.
Listening to his footsteps fade into the distance.
Raelynn finally deflated, sagging against the wall.
She gasped for air.
Grabbing a nearby stone table for support, she massaged her throbbing temples.
Today had been a disastrous ambush. Facing him with zero preparation had drained twice as much energy as usual.
She replayed the confrontation in her mind, assuring herself that she hadn't slipped up. She needed to guarantee he wouldn't mull it over later and realize the truth.
To ensure Lily stayed with her, she had leaned into the "infidelity" narrative with everything she had.
He was the one who suggested it anyway. Why bother correcting him?
Her phone suddenly rang.
Still pale, she answered to hear Chloe Hudson's voice. "I brought Lily out to play. It looks pretty lively today! Where are you? We'll come find you."
Raelynn's freshly settled heart instantly shot into her throat. "Where are you two?!"
Chloe caught the panic in her tone. "We just got to the banquet hall. I was going to grab Lily some dessert. Why, what's wrong?"
Raelynn whipped her head toward the path Sebastian had taken.
He was almost certainly heading back to the banquet hall.
Even though they had just had a catastrophic falling out, she couldn't risk Sebastian running into Lily right now. With his razor-sharp intellect, she couldn't guarantee he wouldn't start putting the pieces together if he saw the little girl.
It was a risk she absolutely could not take.
Though Lily's features hadn't fully matured enough to look exactly like him yet, blood ties carried an undeniable gravity.
