Right now, every major university was gearing up for a brutal fight to secure their spot on the final research team.
"It's done. I'm submitting it today," Raelynn said, opening her laptop. She had already planned to finish it this morning. All her revisions were complete; it just needed one final click.
Seraphina, who had just walked over with a stack of reports, overheard her. She offered a mocking smirk. "Well, you certainly work fast."
But rushing had its pitfalls.
Speed without quality was entirely useless.
Raelynn didn't even bother turning around. She kept her eyes locked on her screen, running diagnostics on the new equipment. "I definitely can't compare to you. When you lack actual talent, you just cheat your way to the top."
Seraphina frowned deeply.
"I think you should realize that utilizing connections and resources is a talent in itself, Raelynn. It's really not that hard to admit when someone is simply better than you."
"I can't speak for everything else, but if you ever decided to switch careers and become a professional lock-picker, I'm sure you'd be highly successful," Raelynn replied effortlessly, refusing to indulge the woman's arrogance while clicking through the machine's core functions.
It took Seraphina a second to process the insult.
Sierra, who had never been great at hiding her expressions, accidentally let out a sharp snort of laughter.
That was when it clicked for Seraphina.
Raelynn was openly calling her a homewrecker, a thief who forced her way into someone else's life.
Her expression turned ice-cold. "If your actual skills were even half as sharp as your mouth, maybe people would actually respect you."
With that, she turned on her heel.
She walked out to the hallway and returned carrying a massive, elaborately wrapped bouquet of flowers.
Raelynn glanced over her shoulder.
It was a stunning arrangement of Scented Red Roses.
Even from across the room, the suffocating, heavy aroma of pure rose essential oil wafted through the air.
Seraphina looked directly at Raelynn, then let her gaze casually slide over to Sierra.
"I adore a bit of romance, so I receive flowers quite often. If either of you like them, feel free to take a few stems to decorate your desks."
She didn't explicitly say who sent them.
Sierra had an underlying heart condition.
The allergic reaction was triggering a devastating cardiac event.
At this severity, it was absolutely life-threatening.
Her demeanor shifted instantly. She caught Sierra as the girl collapsed, then turned a glacial stare on Seraphina. "Call an ambulance!"
Seraphina stared at the hyperventilating girl for a second before finally pulling out her phone to dial emergency services.
Sierra's condition was deteriorating by the second. Raelynn pressed two fingers to her wrist, her expression growing incredibly grim.
She felt an erratic pulse and a completely irregular heart rate—clear signs of a severe heart defect. Combined with the allergic asthma, this could kill her.
With a grunt of effort, Raelynn hoisted Sierra onto her back.
She barked at Seraphina, "Tell them to send a unit from Kingsford University Medical Center! They're two minutes away!"
Seraphina watched as Raelynn sprinted out of the lab with Sierra on her back.
She didn't panic. Instead, she stood perfectly still, her eyes slowly drifting over to Raelynn's open, unattended laptop.
