Raelynn couldn't quite decipher the dark, unreadable depths of Sebastian's gaze. Beneath it all, there was only a chilling indifference.
Sebastian slowly shifted his attention to Ian, his voice dropping to a cool drawl. "Mr. Hudson. I imagine this is going to be quite the headache for you."
Both Raelynn and Ian knew exactly what he meant.
If Seraphina's identity was suddenly elevated to the Yves heiress, the existing marriage contract between the Hudson and Yves families would become a massive problem. If the two families intended to honor it, breaking things off was going to be an absolute nightmare.
Ian didn't bother to respond.
Sebastian simply turned and walked away, guiding Seraphina out of the venue.
The tense little interlude hadn't disturbed the rest of the gala.
The entire confrontation was kept strictly under wraps.
Chairwoman Hayes had already left early due to feeling unwell. Raelynn had lost all interest in socializing, too. She fulfilled her obligations for the night, confirming the donation of three NexusMind surgical robots to the charity, and decided to call it a night.
"I'll take you home."
Ian spoke after a brief moment of thought, already heading for the exit.
Raelynn didn't argue.
The drive back to her apartment took just over half an hour. Once she slid into the passenger seat, Raelynn glanced over at him.
Catching her unspoken question, Ian spoke up. "Ever since that incident at the Yves Garden Estate, the plan has been to cancel the marriage contract. But the business interests between our two families are deeply intertwined. There are still several massive projects underway. For safety's sake, we put the cancellation on hold."
"And how are you handling the situation with Seraphina?" Raelynn asked. She understood the corporate logic. When two powerful families were deeply enmeshed, a sudden break could crash the market and ruin a lot of people's investments. Delaying it was the only rational business move.
"The partnerships are fine for now, but it's time to take this seriously and get the cancellation finalized." Ian flicked the turn signal, taking a sharp corner. "If the Yves family decides to backtrack and insists on the marriage, I'll figure it out. I'll handle it."
Raelynn knew exactly how this world worked.
If the true Yves heiress actually returned.
Both families would prioritize their financial alliances above all else.
Everything was purely hypothetical until that happened.
