Sylvia's eyes welled with unshed tears, a profound sadness washing over her delicate features.
"What happened back then... I don't want to make excuses. But if you truly are Lydia's daughter, I promise to spend the rest of my life making it up to you," Sylvia whispered, her voice trembling as she forced a brave, forgiving smile.
Seraphina recoiled, a look of pure disgust crossing her face.
She absolutely loathed this pathetic, fragile routine.
She was just stating facts, yet Sylvia was acting like she was being physically tortured.
Seraphina had used the exact same innocent victim act countless times herself, and having it weaponized against her infuriated her to no end.
"Let me spell it out for you," Seraphina spat. "From what I understand, after all these years, Chairwoman Hayes still refuses to accept you. Ultimately, it was your vile actions that drove my mother to suicide. If I decide to make an issue out of it, the Chairwoman will absolutely take my side. And when that happens..."
She let the threat hang heavily in the air.
She knew Sylvia was smart enough to fill in the blanks.
If the woman wanted to survive in this house, she needed to fall in line, swear absolute loyalty, and act as Seraphina's personal lapdog. Only then would Seraphina consider letting her stick around.
There was another layer to her threat that she couldn't say out loud with Raelynn standing right there.
The entire Yves family was drowning in the joyous delusion of having their lost heiress back. If Sylvia dared to question her identity now, she would only anger the family and shatter their perfect illusion.
And that would only invite the wrath of Chairwoman Hayes.
She needed Sylvia to do the math and realize she was cornered.
The vicious threat.
Plunged Sylvia into complete silence. She stared sadly at Seraphina for a long moment, finally lowering her gaze and taking a shaky breath. "I'm sorry. I have no right to defend myself."
Raelynn stood perfectly still, watching the dramatic two-minute showdown unfold.
It was abundantly clear that the Yves estate was a viper's nest.
She just wanted to quietly slip away.
But just as she took a step back.
