Raelynn was stunned.
She honestly hadn't expected Sebastian to say something like that.
Her immediate instinct was to fire back and tell him that she just found him absolutely filthy.
But before the words could leave her mouth.
Sebastian's phone rang right on cue.
Raelynn glanced at the screen.
It was that sickeningly sweet contact name again: baby.
Sebastian noticed her looking.
He immediately angled the screen away, turned his back to her, and walked back toward the living room.
Raelynn got the message loud and clear.
He wasn't going to let her intrude even a fraction of an inch into his private life with the woman he truly loved.
Raelynn looked at the jacket he had left behind, but ultimately didn't touch it.
She left it right where it was, turned, and walked away into the freezing snow.
-
In the living room.
When Matilda saw Sebastian walk back in, her face darkened with displeasure. "You went too far this time. If you don't handle Seraphina, I will step in and do it for you."
Sebastian's gaze swept over her coolly. "I can handle protecting one person."
"And what about your wife? What about Lynnie? Don't forget that she's the one you legally married!" Matilda snapped, eyes wide with anger.
Sebastian looked down at his phone, typing out a reply to Seraphina. A faint smile touched his lips. "Lynnie is generous. It's fine."
Matilda choked on her words.
She remembered what Raelynn had said about the divorce.
Watching Sebastian's face, she suddenly asked, "Aren't you afraid she'll divorce you?"
Sebastian's fingers paused over the screen.
He lowered his eyes, lost in thought for a moment, before answering calmly. "She can't bear to."
-
Raelynn didn't stay at the Croix estate a second longer than necessary.
Since everyone was hell-bent on suppressing the truth.
She wasn't going to waste her energy fighting a losing battle right now.
Exhausted, she dragged herself back to her apartment.
The next morning, the second Raelynn walked into the office.
Preston Moreno patted her on the shoulder. "Master Finch is here. You'd better be on your best behavior."
Raelynn was shocked.
She sprinted toward the office.
Pushing the door open.
She saw a white-haired gentleman in a sharp suit sitting stiffly on the sofa.
He was over eighty, with sharp eyes and an incredibly intimidating presence.
Raelynn instantly felt a prickle of nerves and walked in sheepishly. "Alistair, what are you doing here..."
She was feeling incredibly guilty.
Alistair glared at her. "What's this nonsense online about you?"
Her heart melted completely.
But the divorce still wasn't finalized.
Raelynn couldn't help but frown in worry.
Kingsford was a massive city, so the odds of running into... weren't great, right?
She would just have to take things one step at a time.
"As for me, I came here to see just how deep the rot in your picture-perfect marriage goes," Alistair said, shooting Raelynn a scornful look.
Raelynn choked on her words and muttered rebelliously, "I get the point, but did you have to say it like that..."
A knock on the door interrupted them.
Preston's assistant poked her head in. "Mr. Moreno, we have guests asking for Professor Finch."
Preston looked surprised.
Alistair had literally just landed in Kingsford. How did someone already know he was here?
"Who is it?"
"Mr. Croix from Croix Holdings, and his girlfriend."
The smile dropped off Raelynn's face.
She hadn't expected Sebastian to be so brazen about giving Seraphina the official "girlfriend" title.
Something she hadn't gotten in seven years.
Seraphina had it handed to her without lifting a finger.
Sebastian had eyes and ears everywhere, so it wasn't surprising he found out so quickly. He was obviously here to pull strings for Seraphina.
Alistair's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Did they really just deliver themselves to our doorstep? Shall we lock the doors and teach them a lesson?"
