Raelynn honestly admired the old man's thought process.
She quickly warned him, "The Croix family strictly forbade me from exposing their real relationship. There are too many eyes and ears in the company, so please watch your words."
The old man scoffed. "What real relationship? She's nothing but a mistress."
Raelynn leaned in and wholeheartedly agreed. "If this were the old days..."
"She'd have been tarred and feathered and run out of town," Alistair declared, slamming his hand on the table.
Preston was speechless.
This master-apprentice duo really didn't have a single drop of restraint between them.
Knock knock knock—
The door opened.
Sebastian looked up, his gaze sweeping past Raelynn without lingering for even a second.
He didn't stop to look at her.
When Seraphina saw Raelynn sitting in the reception room, she instinctively frowned.
But then she quickly linked her arm through Sebastian's, completely ignoring Raelynn, and smiled politely as she greeted Alistair. "Professor Finch, hello. I'm Seraphina Vance. It's such an honor to finally meet you."
Alistair raised his teacup, took a slow sip, and shot a look at Sebastian. "Mr. Croix, long time no see."
He completely ignored Seraphina.
Seraphina's expression froze for a split second.
Sebastian remained perfectly composed, offering a polite nod and a faint smile. "The last time was three years ago, when my grandfather fell severely ill. It was you who came out of retirement to save his life. He still talks about you constantly, and we are eternally grateful."
At the mention of this, Alistair couldn't help but glance at Raelynn.
He had been vacationing overseas at the time. If Raelynn hadn't practically begged him, he never would have bothered to see Chairman Croix Sr.
And yet, Raelynn never took the credit. She never even breathed a word to the Croix family that she was the one who got him there.
When it came down to it.
The Croix family owed Raelynn a massive debt!
And they didn't even realize they were breathing because of her!
Raelynn knew exactly what the old man's look meant.
It said: "Look at the people you wasted your life on."
She didn't dare say a word.
"I had no idea! I didn't realize Professor Finch and the Croix family went so far back," Seraphina said, acting surprised.
Alistair finally spared Seraphina a glance before looking back at Sebastian. "I seem to remember the old Chairman mentioning that you were a married man, Mr. Croix. And who might this be?"
The question was incredibly sharp.
Raelynn stayed perfectly quiet.
Seraphina couldn't understand why he would ask something like that. If he knew Sebastian was married, and she was standing here holding his arm, why did he need to make her spell it out?
Especially right in front of Raelynn.
If they actually laid it all out on the table, she felt like Raelynn would just sit there enjoying the show.
While she couldn't understand why Preston had actually hired Raelynn at NexusMind, Raelynn was still a nobody here. Seraphina looked at Preston. "Mr. Moreno, would you mind asking the irrelevant personnel to leave? I have important business to discuss next."
Preston, who had just been enjoying the drama, raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
Seraphina glanced at Raelynn. "Your employee. She really doesn't know how to read a room."
Did Raelynn really think she belonged in a meeting like this?
Why was she just sitting there refusing to leave?
Raelynn pointed to herself.
Me? You want me to leave?
"Mr. Croix, you sure spoil Ms. Vance, letting her throw her weight around and order people out of my company," Preston said, a mocking smirk on his lips.
It was painfully obvious that Sebastian's unconditional backing was the only reason for this.
