She would just have to figure out another way to keep her suppressed.
"But those two signed divorce agreements are set in stone. The late chairman orchestrated them seven years ago. Once the three months are up, the divorce will still happen..." Mary pointed out the critical issue.
Matilda frowned.
If Mary hadn't peeked inside the file folder and seen it was the divorce agreement, their entire plan would have been ruined.
She had subtly probed around.
From the very beginning, Sebastian had no idea the actual divorce papers had been signed long ago.
The truth about the agreements would detonate eventually.
A strange gleam flashed in her eyes. "At the very least... delaying it buys us temporary peace."
Mary couldn't quite grasp the older woman's true intentions.
If she didn't want Seraphina joining the family, there were plenty of other methods. Why insist on dragging out Raelynn's suffering?
Yet, on second thought, why was Raelynn so determined anyway? What could she possibly be dissatisfied with, having a husband like Mr. Croix?
Everyone knew Raelynn had married way out of her league.
Even if a man in his high position had a few women lingering around him, if Raelynn couldn't make peace with that, wasn't she just asking for trouble?
"Could Mrs. Croix be having an affair?" Mary's eyes widened in realization.
Unless it was an absolute emergency, why would she leave herself no way out?
Matilda's hand paused on the armrest.
A flash of sharp displeasure cut across her usually serene face. She shot Mary a cold look. "The Croix family does not tolerate anything that damages our reputation. Watch your words."
A wave of fear washed over Mary's face.
She quickly lowered her head.
Matilda frowned for a long moment before finally looking away.
"Look into the people Raelynn has been contacting recently."
-
Not long after Raelynn returned to the hospital room.
A nurse knocked on the door.
She quickly hurried over to unlock it.
The nurse came in to check Lily's temperature.
Before leaving.
The nurse pulled a brand-new, unopened pair of Birkenstock slippers from her cart and handed them to Raelynn. "Put these on. I noticed your feet were cut up."
Raelynn was surprised. "For me?"
The nurse smiled and handed her two disposable iodine swabs. "I happen to have an extra pair. Don't mention it."
She smoothed out her clothes.
"To get a divorce."
Chloe's eyes widened. "Holy crap. So sudden?"
Raelynn turned to look at the gray sky outside. It looked like it was going to snow, the north wind howling against the glass.
"It's not sudden. I've been agonizing for this moment for far too long."
If Sebastian's actions hadn't directly endangered Lily, she might have had a little more patience. She really ought to thank him; he helped her see right through him.
Chloe stepped forward and hugged Raelynn tightly. "I'll be waiting for you to come back."
Kick the jerk to the curb and enjoy a blissful life!
Raelynn offered a small smile and nodded.
She went downstairs, hailed a cab, and headed straight for city hall.
Halfway there, she tried calling Sebastian.
The line showed he was busy.
She wasn't sure if he was genuinely on a call or if he had just hung up on her.
Too tired to keep trying, she simply typed out a text and hit send.
