They couldn't hide Lily's accident from Professor Alistair Finch.
Just as they finished discharging Lily, the professor rushed over in a panic.
Seeing the bandage wrapped around Lily's head, the old man practically blew his top, though he couldn't bear to scold the little girl for sneaking out.
So, he pointed his fury entirely at Raelynn. "Look at the absolute trash you involve yourself with!"
He had already learned the whole story.
Even as an outsider, it made his blood boil!
Raelynn didn't dare make a peep.
"Let me and your mentor's wife take Lily for a while. The child has a weak constitution. After going through all this—the fright, the fever, the physical trauma—she needs to rest properly for a good while!"
Raelynn knew Alistair loved Lily the most.
A single scrape on Lily was no different from carving a piece of flesh out of the old man's heart.
"Okay..." How could Raelynn possibly refuse?
Alistair had mostly settled down in Kingsford, living in a highly secure, confidential villa district assigned by the government. Raelynn felt entirely at ease leaving her there.
Besides, she hadn't bought a new place yet.
She wasn't in a rush to drag Lily around while she was still figuring things out.
Chloe scratched her head. "This was my fault. I got careless..."
Alistair scoffed coldly. "Why are you taking the blame? If you ask me, it's those heartless bastards who are at fault!"
"Grandpa, who are you mad at?" Lily asked, peeking her head out curiously.
Alistair shot a pointed look at Raelynn. "A jerk. When you grow up, Lily, make sure you keep your eyes peeled. Don't be like your Mom, hand-picking her own karmic retribution."
Raelynn was utterly speechless.
Please, stop scolding me.
Lily blinked, then dropped a bombshell. "My papa?"
Raelynn nearly choked. Lily was far too clever and observant.
She stumbled over her words, trying to deny it. "No..."
Lily turned to look at her, her face completely serious. "Mom, you don't need to explain. My papa is dead, I know."
"...Oh, right," Raelynn muttered.
Indeed. He might as well be dead. Utterly useless, occasionally springing up like a zombie just to make everyone miserable.
Once the discharge paperwork was complete.
Alistair carried Lily to the car.
He attended to Lily's every need personally.
Terrified of provoking the old man further, Raelynn scurried around like a frightened quail, helping Chloe load the car.
Alistair was just about to give Raelynn a few more instructions.
When his gaze caught something by the hospital lobby entrance.
The smile on Seraphina's lips faded.
The people around Raelynn were just like her—unpresentable. She didn't even bother stooping to their level.
She tried to exchange a few polite pleasantries with Alistair.
But Alistair kept his cold, sharp gaze fixed entirely on Sebastian.
"You piece of work!"
Raelynn genuinely hadn't expected the old man to be this furious.
He was cursing him out right to his face.
With a status like Sebastian's, no one ever dared to disrespect him so blatantly.
Even Seraphina's expression shifted drastically at the insult.
She couldn't understand how they had offended the professor.
She quickly looked at Sebastian.
Sebastian, however, showed no signs of displeasure. He gently set Shane down.
Just as he was about to speak.
The car window in front of Alistair rolled down.
A little girl, bundled up tightly in a mask and hat with only a pair of large, beautiful dark eyes visible, stared straight in Raelynn's direction. She reached out her tiny hand and suddenly called out.
"Mom?"
