She stood up and said her goodbyes to Master Agatha. When she pushed the door open, a wave of heat hit her face, nearly making her pass out.
Squinting, she headed toward the intersection. From a distance, she spotted the car still idling in its original spot.
A wave of relief washed over her. At least he was in the car, safe from the blistering sun.
But as she got closer, she realized he wasn't inside.
The rear door was wide open. The driver, sitting up front, noticed her approach and started to get out to greet her.
Just as she was about to ask, she turned her head and saw Randal standing behind the car.
He must have been standing there for a while. A dark patch of sweat stained the back of his shirt, and his damp hair clung to his forehead.
Holding his phone, he tapped away, apparently replying to a message.
He was so focused that he didn't even notice her until she walked right up to him.
"Done with your lesson?" he asked, shoving the phone into his pocket.
She reached out and touched his flushed cheek, her brow furrowing deeply. "Why didn't you wait in the car? Do you have any idea how hot it is out here?"
"I was afraid I'd miss you when you came out."
He stood before her, a full head taller, yet in that moment, he looked like a wilted tree with its leaves drooping under the scorching sun.
Her heart softened, an unexpected ache blossoming at his foolishness.
"Let's go grab something to eat."
"Where to?" he asked.
Willa thought about it. She wasn't familiar with this area, and she hadn't noticed any restaurants on her way here.
Martin Jenson caught up from behind, striding toward them.
"Martin, is there anywhere good to eat around here?" Willa asked, turning to him. "Do you want to join us?"
"If you walk to the intersection and take a left, there's a small diner," Martin offered. "The atmosphere isn't exactly upscale, but the food is great. I could take you—"
"No need," Randal cut him off. His voice was hoarse, stripping the command of its usual intimidation.
Martin awkwardly forced a smile. "I guess... it wouldn't really suit Mr. Yates anyway."
Willa sighed helplessly and turned to Martin. "Thanks for your hard work today. I'll practice the techniques when I get back, and I'll reach out if I have any questions."
