At that moment, Chris finally lifted his gaze to meet Donovan's.
For a brief two seconds, their eyes locked intensely, but then Chris quickly lowered his eyes and respectfully bowed before speaking. "I came to Valanthea because I have a…"
As he had been abroad for a very long time and had been raised away from Valanthea, he wasn't fluent in the language. His words felt stiff and awkward, as if he wasn't entirely comfortable expressing himself in Valanthean.
At that, the man who had accompanied him to the interview, a representative from a security company, smiled and stepped in to explain. "Mr. Kane, Chris came to Valanthea because his ex-girlfriend was Valantian. After he left his job, she brought him here. He isn't fluent in Valanthean, and he doesn't have other skills, so he's looking to get back into his old line of work as a bodyguard."
The representative continued, "His biggest weakness is that he's not great with words. He's very quiet and tends to keep to himself. But he's honest and hardworking, and extremely loyal. If you pay him, he'll do whatever task you give him without question."
Donovan listened thoughtfully but didn't respond.
Ethan, standing nearby, nudged him. "Don, why don't we just hire him? It's fine that he's not great with words. As long as he's got the skills and is sharp, that's all that matters."
Giselle stepped closer, studying the man in front of her carefully. Her eyes lingered on his face. At this point, she had an odd sense of deja vu as something about his features looked strangely familiar to her.
Just as she was staring at him, the man suddenly raised his eyes again, locking gazes with her.
For a moment, their eyes met directly, and Giselle's heart skipped a beat.
Chris kept his head lowered. "Yes, I am. My ancestors are from Guilford."
At this point, Ethan jumped in. "Yeah, people from there sometimes have more exotic features. He grew up abroad and speaks mostly Edevanian, so I'm sure his habits are a bit different from ours. There's really nothing to nitpick about his background, though."
Giselle nodded thoughtfully before whispering to Donovan, "What do you think? Should we just hire him? We don't need to overcomplicate it. After all, he's not going to be protecting a world leader. Let's just hire him and see how it goes. If it doesn't work, we can let him go."
However, when Donovan took his eyes off Chris, he immediately shook his head. "He can leave. He's not the right guy for the job."
His words caught everyone off guard. Even Chris looked up in surprise at Donovan, clearly feeling disappointed by the decision.
