By then, Chris was already crossing back over the street, Kali safe in his arms as he walked toward the stunned onlookers.
"Are you out of your damn mind?" The truck driver stormed over and exploded the moment he reached him. "You jumped out to die, is that it? If you want to die, do it somewhere else. Don't drag me into it, idiot. Moron!"
After venting, the driver saw that Chris was uninjured and stalked off.
Chris, however, seemed either unable to understand that stream of insults or simply indifferent to them.
He only returned the dog to Giselle and said quietly, "I'm sorry. It was my negligence. I almost got her killed. Fortunately, she's unharmed."
Giselle gathered Kali into her arms, shaken and filled with guilt. "Are you out of your mind? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? Next time you're doing your job, your own safety comes first. There's no need to throw your life away like that. You scared me half to death."
She loved her dog, but she wasn't blind to the difference between an animal's life and a human one.
If Chris had been killed in that instant, she wasn't sure she could ever forgive herself.
After a long silence, Donovan finally spoke. There was none of Giselle's emotion in his voice—just a cool, understated acknowledgement.
"Good work. Go park the car."
"Yes."
Chris didn't linger. He showed no lingering shock from the near miss, no need to catch his breath. He simply turned back into the stoic bodyguard he always was and drove the car to the nearby lot.
Giselle tightened her grip on the leash and walked with Donovan toward the park entrance, still unsettled.
