Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 694

When the call connected, Donovan spoke in a low voice. "The person I asked you to look into. Do you have anything?"

On the other end was a lawyer friend of his in Usna.

"I checked," the man replied. "His background matches what you already gave me. He really did serve in Usna's Special Forces, and he did military work in Auraelia afterward. I pulled a few group photos of him from his unit. I'll send them to you."

"Good."

"There's one more detail," the lawyer added. "Three years ago, he left for Malithorn. According to people who stayed in contact with him, he went there for business, but no one seems to know exactly what he was doing."

The mention of Malithorn made Donovan pause.

"That's all I have for now," his friend continued. "Didn't find any red flags. By the way, why are you looking into this guy? Did he cross you?"

"No." Donovan ended the call after a brief, polite exchange of thanks.

When he looked toward Chris again, a subtle tension eased from his chest.

His first impression of the man had been distrust, and years of reading people had taught him that instincts were rarely wrong.

He had only agreed to hire Chris because he had personally witnessed his combat capability during the incident at Anson Pharmaceuticals, and it was exactly what Donovan needed.

He had later investigated that hostage situation at the police station and confirmed that the attackers had been targeting the company for commercial retaliation. Chris' appearance had been coincidental. There was no connection.

Still, even after hiring him, even after reviewing his documents and finding no obvious inconsistencies, Donovan had quietly arranged for further investigation. He wanted absolute certainty that the bodyguard shadowing Giselle was reliable.
