Stunned by the sudden attack, Anne couldn't process what had just happened.
She roared at Chris, "What the hell is wrong with you? Are you out of your mind?"
Chris ignored her. Disregarding the gathering crowd, he turned on his heel and walked straight back the way he came.
At the same time, Gideon witnessed the entire scene and caught a glimpse of Chris walking past.
Although they had only met once, Gideon recognized the grim-faced bodyguard he had seen with Giselle.
He looked back at Anne, who had been brutally shoved to the ground and was still cursing, and paused for a moment.
Anne struggled to her feet. When she saw Gideon, she instantly understood why Chris had been so violent.
Watching Chris' retreating figure, she did not dare go after him openly. She stood rooted to the spot, gritting her teeth in frustration. She was caught in a dilemma, unable to leave or stay, while her body throbbed with pain.
A passerby asked with concern, "Miss, do you know that man?"
"No, I don't," Anne denied quickly.
"You don't?" The helpful man immediately pulled out his phone. "I'll call the cops for you. Don't worry, there are cameras around. That guy is too much, beating a woman in broad daylight. It's lawless—"
"Don't do that!" Anne panicked and almost lunged to grab his phone. "Mind your own business! I'll handle my own affairs! Don't cause trouble for me!"
Hearing this, the man rolled his eyes at her, put his phone away, and walked off.
Anne stood there in a daze for a long time. Thinking about how much realism Chris had put into his performance just now, she grew angrier the more she thought about it. An ominous feeling rose in her chest, and she decided not to wait around any longer.
Meanwhile, Chris returned to the car.
He started the engine quickly and drove back to the office with the bag of still-warm roasted chestnuts.
