"If they are truly in love and determined to get married, I have no objections," Dorothea declared.
It was obvious that she cared deeply about Gideon.
From her perspective, the Sterling and Kane families were of equal social standing. Gideon and Marselle were well-matched in age and appearance. If they were truly together and expecting a child, it could actually be a very good union.
"Make some arrangement," Dorothea instructed Ethan. "I will meet with Gideon personally to talk this over. If his mind is made up, then we need to prepare to visit the Sterling family and formally propose. We must follow every rule of etiquette."
Hearing this, Grace could no longer sit still. She slammed her fork down on the table with a heavy clatter.
She asked furiously, "What does this mean? Are you planning to officially welcome that bastard back into the family? Are you going to throw him a grand, glorious wedding?"
Dorothea had been thoroughly disappointed in Grace ever since the incident with the fire at the theater. She no longer felt the need to tiptoe around Grace's feelings.
She said, "Grace, I am advising you not to be stubborn. Gideon is a grown man. He is Ethan's biological son. That is a fact that cannot be changed."
Dorothea continued, her voice firm. "He doesn't live with us. He has his own career and life, separate from the Kane family.
"You need to be a bigger person and stop holding onto this grudge. You don't have to get involved, but you cannot interfere with Ethan taking responsibility. That is his duty."
Grace's face turned red with rage.
She let out a cold, mocking laugh. "You make it sound so simple. Have you considered that Ms. Sterling is a legitimate, cherished daughter of her family? Do you really think the Sterlings will agree to marry her off to a shameful bastard?"
She was not finished. "If they hold a high-profile wedding, the scandal of Ethan having an affair and an illegitimate child will be splashed all over the news. Don't you care about our family's reputation? I will have to face people looking at me with pity and whispering nasty things behind my back. Can you handle that?"
Dorothea was stumped by this argument. She turned to look at Ethan helplessly.
