Giselle really didn't want to spill the beans, not right now.

She couldn't imagine how furious Donovan would get when he learned the truth. She couldn't imagine just what he would do upon learning about Chris' betrayal, especially when Donovan viewed him as a close friend. The consequences would be unimaginable.

Perhaps it would be better for her to sweep it under the rug for now.

She was going into labor soon. She should prioritize her baby first. Besides, she really didn't have the energy to weather the storm that would come if she revealed the truth.

So, she came up with a plausible excuse, saying, "Chris had a chat with me and said he wants to return to his homeland. He plans to resign, but he doesn't know how to bring it up."

Donovan blinked dumbly when he heard her words. "What are you saying?"

As her words registered in his mind, an obvious tinge of disappointment and anger appeared in his eyes. "Resign? I forbid it!"

He didn't even want to know why Chris wanted to resign.

In his opinion, there was no reason Chris would give that would make Donovan accept his resignation.

Giselle tried to persuade him. "Maybe Chris isn't used to the Valantian lifestyle. He doesn't have friends, and he's always on standby. He prefers his life back in his hometown. I heard he has a beloved ex-girlfriend in Malithorn who wants to get back together. She wants him home.

"So, why not just let him go? Our regular bodyguards can keep us safe well enough. As for work… We can always hire a replacement. He doesn't want to be here. No amount of money you pay him will make him happy."

However, Donovan only became more annoyed as he listened to her tale. He simply couldn't accept that a loyal subordinate, someone he spent every day with, would suddenly act up and say he wanted to resign.

He continued to accompany Giselle for 30 minutes before Chris, who had gone downstairs to park the car, finally reappeared outside the ward.
