Chris had a hesitant look on his face when Donovan said he had an assignment for him. Still, he said, "What is it?"
Donovan immediately forwarded him a link to a particular article, saying that a pharmaceutical company had recently colluded with the media to run a smear campaign against Kane Pharmaceutical Group's newly developed drug.
In the article, the journalist claimed that the drug contained certain banned, addictive ingredients.
Although rumors about it hadn't spread like wildfire, it had still done enough to damage the company's image. Some hospitals had even pulled it from their shelves at the first whiff of trouble.
Even though they'd already reported this to the police, it would take a long time for the authorities to investigate and issue a statement on the rumor-mongering. By the time the official statement was out, it was likely that the negative buzz regarding the drug would be household news.
Once consumers slapped the "counterfeit drug" label on it, the losses the company would face would be immeasurable.
So, Donovan couldn't pin his hopes on the police to uncover the truth as quickly as possible and nip the rumor in the bud; he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Once he was done explaining the source of their issues, he forwarded Chris a photo.
It was a picture of a bespectacled man, Donald Fletcher. He worked as a reporter in one of the mainstream financial news outlets in the city. He also happened to be the first reporter to pen an article "exposing" Kane Pharmaceutical Group for "counterfeit drugs".
"I want you to track his whereabouts." Donovan then added meaningfully, "Once you've looked into him, I want you to use the fastest way possible to get him to talk. How you do it is up to you."
Chris understood, but he didn't agree as readily as he used to. Instead, he fell silent.
"You can't do it?"
"No. This is easy." Chris couldn't help but recall Giselle's words. He was still wavering about whether to stay or leave.
That was because Chris had exceeded his expectations with his skills over and over again. As a result, Donovan had come to consider Chris as a perfect must-have talent to keep. The fact that Chris was someone who was totally in sync with him only cemented that thought further.
Giselle stayed in the hospital for half a day for observation. When she experienced no complications, Donovan promptly brought her home to recuperate.
Meanwhile, Giselle might look cool and composed on the surface when in reality, she was anything but. She was so anxious that she couldn't stomach even a single bite.
Her mind kept shifting between two men. One of them was Chris, a loyal bodyguard she'd considered as family, and the other was a vicious crime boss who ruled Gold Delta with an iron fist, Orin.
These two faces and their respective identities plagued her mind, making her tense in anger and fear before quickly shifting to soft reluctance. Those complicated emotions seemed to drag her down, suffocating her.
So, she tried to distract herself by sipping on her water and scrolling through her phone. She did all that just to remove herself from that negative cycle to prevent her agitation from affecting the baby. Alas, her efforts were futile as they only served to make her feel more unsettled.
