"Ugh, don't bring it up." Vivienne slumped the moment she heard Giselle mention Silas. "Renee already took him away. You know what she's going through—she lost her son, her daughter's in prison, of course she's going to cling to her only grandson."
She went on, "Some time ago, Renee had me sign an agreement. She said she'd give me this luxury house and a sum of money, on the condition that I never see Silas again."
"You actually agreed?" Giselle found it unbelievable.
As a soon-to-be mother, during these past months of pregnancy, she had already formed a deep bond with the baby in her womb. She had never truly understood maternal love before, but now she was beginning to understand it.
That was why Vivienne's decision puzzled her.
"What choice did I have if I didn't agree?" Vivienne gave a bitter smile. "The economy's been bad lately. My dental hospital hasn't been doing well either—we've lost over a million. What I lack most right now is money. Without money, I can't even raise a child.
"So after struggling with it for a few days, I still agreed. I gave Silas to Renee and won't visit again. When I've really made money in the future, I'll take Renee to court."
Giselle noticed that when Vivienne talked about Silas, she wasn't as resentful as before. In fact, she seemed much more relaxed, her mental state surprisingly good, nothing like a mother who had lost her son.
"Alright, enough about me." Vivienne quickly changed the subject. "What about you? Did you check the baby's gender? Is it a boy or a girl?"
"No. I don't care about that at all. As long as the baby is born healthy."
Having been through an abortion before and suffered lasting effects from epilepsy, she felt that being able to conceive naturally and make it through prenatal checkups so far was already something to be deeply grateful for. Whether it was a boy or a girl didn't matter to her at all.
"Judging by the belly shape, I'd say it's a girl." Vivienne examined her seriously.
"A girl would be perfect. I've always wanted a daughter."
Sitting on the couch, Giselle took a sip of the water the housekeeper had brought her. She glanced around the living room and noticed some children's toys in the corner, as well as a few pieces of children's clothing hanging outside.
Clearly, her son, still under three years old, usually lived here. Then why had Vivienne said she had already given Silas to Renee?
While she was still puzzled, Vivienne came back from the restroom.
She sat down beside Giselle, sighed softly, and asked in a slightly subdued tone, "Gigi, do you think I was too heartless to give Silas to Renee?"
"You could talk it over with her," Giselle said. "There's no need to cut ties. You could still visit occasionally. After all, you're busy with your career and don't really have time to care for a child full-time."
Vivienne said thoughtfully, "Honestly, I mainly agreed to her terms because I felt sorry for Renee. Look at her. She's lost her children one after another over the past few years. She aged almost a decade overnight. It's truly pitiful."
