When Donovan returned, the nurse informed him that Giselle had a visitor that day—a man. They had spoken in the room for over ten minutes before the man left quietly.
Based on the nurse's description, Donovan instantly knew the visitor was none other than Chris.
Given the recent standoff between them, Donovan assumed Chris had come to say goodbye to Giselle. He figured there was no other reason for the visit. He didn't bring it up with Giselle when he entered the room.
However, the incident lingered in his mind later that night. He felt an inexplicable unease.
Perhaps it was intuition. Donovan never usually checked Giselle's phone, but in the dead of night, he felt a strange compulsion to pick it up.
The couple knew each other's passwords. He entered the password and unlocked her device with ease.
He casually scrolled through her messages first but found nothing suspicious. Just as he was about to put the phone back, a spam notification from the network provider popped up. Out of habit, Donovan opened the message to delete it for her.
That action led him to the main message list. There was a text from Chris.
He tapped it open and saw the entire chat history between Giselle and Chris. The content shocked him.
They were discussing money. Chris stated he would leave as soon as the money arrived. Giselle agreed to pay him but reminded him to destroy the evidence he was using to threaten Donovan.
Donovan felt his heart tremble as he read the shocking words.
His gaze froze when he read the final sentence where Chris said he would leave the country and never see Donovan again. It felt like a heavy blow to the head. His chest tightened painfully.
He chain-smoked as he stared blankly into the hazy night. He thought about many things amidst the swirling smoke. He couldn't understand why Chris suddenly backstabbed him.
Donovan couldn't figure out where he had gone wrong. Why had he allowed Chris into his world so easily? How had he been so charmed that he lost his mind and fell deeper into the trap?
He suffered until dawn. He managed to sleep for a few hours before Emma's crying woke him up. He forced himself to get out of bed to start the new day.
"Hey, what's wrong with you?" Giselle asked as she washed up. She noticed his fatigue and lack of energy. "Did the baby keep you up? Maybe you should go home to rest for a while. You have so much work during the day. Don't ruin your health. I feel like you have something on your mind…"
Donovan's thoughts immediately returned to the text messages from the night before. His groggy head felt even dizzier.
