Considering that Giselle was still recovering from childbirth and the fact that Emma was just born, Donovan decided not to confront her yet. He acted as if nothing was wrong.
"I had a video conference with the Usna team last night," he said. "It ran late."
"I see." Giselle had her own secrets weighing on her mind, so she did not press him further. "Are you busy today? Why don't you go home and lie down? The bed here isn't as comfortable as home. Plus Emma cries a lot. You will sleep better there."
"Yeah." Donovan actually planned to do exactly that. "I will head home now and come back later. Make sure you rest. Don't walk around too much and try to stay off your phone and rest your eyes."
"I get it. Stop nagging me," replied Giselle.
Donovan got up and tidied himself. He switched back to his doting father mode and played with Emma for a while. Then he picked up his phone and left the room as if nothing had happened.
Once he left the care center and got into his car, he sat in a daze for a long time. A dangerous glint entered his eyes.
He drove alone back to the villa a few miles away.
Donovan walked into the living room with a cold demeanor. He called Heath over and assigned him a task. He ordered Heath not to delay for even a minute and to get it done as fast as possible.
After Heath left to carry out the order, Donovan went to his study. He wanted to distract himself with work. However, his head began to ache when he opened his computer and faced the dazzling array of chemical symbols on the research documents.
He couldn't relax and didn't want to do anything.
An hour or two later, Heath reported that the task was complete. Only then did Donovan finally take out his phone and pull up Chris' number.
He stared at the familiar digits. He could faintly hear Chris addressing him respectfully. It all felt so ironic.
Donovan no longer hesitated and dialed the number.
Donovan leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes. He felt numb and cold as he thought about what he was about to do.
Half an hour later, Heath knocked on the door and quietly reported, "Sir, Chris is here."
Donovan stood up and walked out of the study with a gloomy expression. He looked down from the railing on the second floor. He saw Chris get out of the car and walk toward the living room.
Chris still had that cold and humble look about him.
At that moment, Chris looked up and their eyes met.
It was only a gaze that lasted a few seconds, but Donovan's eyes were already filled with danger. He put his hands in his pockets and walked downstairs with a chilling presence.
When he reached the first floor, he gave Heath a subtle signal.
