Carl raised an eyebrow. “Exactly. The online tide has already turned everyone’s slamming her for exploiting the audience. Adler didn’t just let it slide; he sent his men to grab her. A pack of Gold Empire wolves crossed the ocean from the Eastern Continent to the Northern Continent and caught her- must have been a spectacle. Pity we didn’t see it.”
I tugged at the corner of my mouth. “Messing with the Gold Empire no regard for life.”
As long as it was done, I didn’t care about the drama.
I asked, “Did the Rogue Pack’s stock move?”
that takes money and
Carl bit into an apple, casually. “Adler grabbed the liar, your name’s been cleared, and the internet’s full of sympathy for you. Our stock’s climbed and climbed steady as ever.”

I let out a breath; the stone in my chest finally dropped. “Good. Don’t get in the way of my making money.”
I put
down my
fork. “I’ll call Kirby.”
Carl frowned. “He told you to rest. Don’t get involved in Pack matters.”
I looked back and sneered. “I’m going to strike back. I’ll finish them.”
Not just Kirby – the whole lot of Crimson Moon Pack.
Carl shrugged. “Yesterday I had my hacker squad track down the loudest of those pushers. They were cooperative; they spilled a lot. I’ll send it to your computer in a bit.”
“Nice work, Carl,” I praised without holding back. “I knew I could count on you.”
“Spare me.” Carl smirked — he was long immune to my halfhearted compliments.
The butler came in cautiously. “Miss, Kirby still hasn’t left.”
I sneered. “Wait for me to chase him off?”

I ignored it, but Carl insisted I go out and soak up some sun, said smelling the flowers would
calm me.
I rolled my eyes; he was clearly fishing for conversation.

Asphodel snorted. “What a dog.”

The plum trees in the courtyard were in full bloom; their scent was light, the sun just right.
I squinted, feeling pleasantly at ease.
Carl rocked on the swing like a child, grinning.
“Leslie, want to swing? I’ll push you!” he called.
I gave him a look. “Childish. I’ll go check up ahead.”
The backyard’s plants were precious varieties Father had transplanted from the Rogue Pack ancestral lands; they were lush and well tended.
As I admired them, a large red wolf stepped out of the flowerbeds. Its gait was steady toward me.
Asphodel went instantly alert. “Not Rogue Pack.”
No one dared shift into wolf form here without permission.
The giant wolf stared at me, gave a pained whine, then shrank down and changed back into human form – Kirby.
His eyes were rimmed with blood, his face haggard, smelling faintly of smoke. He looked like a different person, collapsed and worn.
He dropped to one knee before me, almost a half–kneel. “Leslie, I have something to say.”
The butler and a few gammas rushed over. “Miss-”
I raised a hand to dismiss them; they backed off.
Asphodel sneered quietly. “He climbed the wall? Pathetic!”
I smiled thinly, my tone detached. “Kirby, you can’t even use the front gate anymore?”
He pressed his lips together, his expression complicated. “I wanted to speak to you in person.”
“Fine. Say it.” I gave him a look that was half amusement, half waiting for his lie.
He hesitated, then: “About yesterday… I’m sorry.”
