Even now, she could still remember it: the flickering old streetlamp in that rundown alley, the dial tone after the call was hung up…
She had hung up the phone, heartbroken, and dragged her small, heavy body under the streetlight. In that moment, she had felt like a lost soul.
Just as she was consumed by despair, a kind-faced old man in traditional attire appeared at the end of the street. He knelt down and opened his arms to her.
“Are you Vivienne? From this day on, Grandpa will protect you in your grandmother’s place.”
Later, she went back to Obsidian Estate with her grandfather. Not long after, Serena showed up with Isabella. As a mother, she never mentioned the mistakes she had made. She just held Vivienne and cried, saying their family should never be separated again.
Because she had been abandoned for so long, she craved that warmth. Even though she knew in her heart that Serena didn’t love her, she didn’t care.
She even went so far as to use the Ravenshire family’s power to please her mother, knowing how much Serena loved status and wealth. But she never imagined that the result would be Serena trampling on her even more.
Vivienne watched her mother’s theatrical performance, her heart unusually calm.
Serena had no idea what her daughter was thinking. Seeing her silence, she assumed Vivienne was backing down. After all, this tactic had worked every single time in the past.
“Mrs. Lexton, what’s going on here?”
Just as Serena was about to say a few nice words to smooth things over, Cedric suddenly appeared at Vellmont Lodge. Serena’s expression shifted slightly, and she greeted him with a smile. “Cedric, what brings you here?”
Cedric hadn't just arrived; he had been standing outside the garden for a while. He had no intention of elaborating, his tone distant. “Northwing Court made some sweet dessert. The old master would like Miss Lexton to join him.” He then looked over at Vivienne.
Vivienne ignored her and turned to look at Cedric. “They’re trying to take over my…”
This was the first time Serena had felt such a loss of control. But with Cedric present, she didn’t dare show her true colors. After a brief moment of shock, she quickly composed herself.
“I know! I promise you!”
She slowly knelt down to be at eye level with Vivienne, her gaze gentle. “I promise you, okay? Are you satisfied now?”
