Security finally managed to scatter the mob, forcing the onlookers to leave the area.
A group of girls from the Merit Program huddled together, occasionally throwing glances back at the girl with the megaphone.
"She's out of her mind. How dare she cross the senior guys like that?"
"I know, right? I heard she was the one behind that whole 'crime scene' prank a few days ago, too."
"God, she's fearless!"
As the girls chattered away, two of them remained completely silent.
Mira Easton looked miserable. She had offended Vivienne in the restroom earlier. Would she hold a grudge?
Noticing her heavy mood, her friend gently nudged her. "What's wrong?"
Mira shook her head, forcing a weak smile. "Isolde, did the teacher call you to the office this morning to talk about the scholarship spots?"
At the mention of the scholarship, the other girls immediately swarmed them.
"Wait, Isolde? Did they finalize the list for this year? Who got it?"
"Obviously, you and Mira are locked in. Ugh, my parents have given up on me. They sold a house back in our hometown just to pay my tuition until graduation."
The competition within the Merit Program was utterly brutal. While the wealthy kids in the standard classes just needed to pass, the scholarship students were held to an impossible standard. The rich kids could fail and retake exams, or at worst, repeat a year. But if a Merit Program student failed a makeup exam, they were instantly expelled.
Despite the exorbitant tuition and ruthless elimination process, the academy was still the ultimate dream for thousands of underprivileged students.
Isolde squeezed her hand. "I actually saw the scholarship list on the desk."
Mira froze, her grip tightening. "So I..."
She didn't even have to finish the sentence. The look in Isolde's eyes gave her the answer.
All the color drained from Mira's face. She burst into tears. "It was that last math question. I knew how to solve it! But that morning... my mom forced me to watch the food cart while she dropped my brother off at school. That's why I was late. If I just had a little more time, I would have..."
Isolde stood there, at a loss for words. A suffocating wave of despair washed over her.
They weren't like the other kids in the Merit Program. Both of them had grown up in the slums. Mira's mother sold hot dogs on the street, and Isolde's mother survived by cheating at underground poker games. Technically, girls with their backgrounds had no business being at the academy.
Without that scholarship money, Mira's education was over.
