Cyril glanced at Preston, a harmless smile touching the corners of his eyes. "Alright."
Preston raised an eyebrow.
Graham was stunned, looking thrilled. "My grandson's chess skills aren't something just anyone can challenge! If you're confident enough to make that boast, you must have some serious skills, kid."
Cyril remained perfectly humble. "You flatter me, sir. I just tinker with the board in my free time. I'm completely self-taught. Grandpa is just being protective of me."
"Nonsense!" Graham waved him off. "It's not lunchtime yet anyway. Why don't we have a match right now?"
The Everhart patriarch knew Caspian's personality perfectly. The man never made empty boasts. Cyril had only just returned to the family, yet Caspian was willing to hand over a copper mine just to back him up. This kid was definitely something special.
"Done! Cedric, set up the board!"
Caspian agreed immediately. He fully intended to elevate Cyril's status in front of everyone, ensuring no one would dare look down on him again.
Julian lazily raised a hand. "Grandpa, watching two people play chess is boring for the rest of us. Why don't we make it interesting? Let's throw in a betting pool."
Edmund, having not brought a grandson to show off, was immediately invested. "I like the sound of that."
Naturally, Caspian wasn't going to ruin the fun for his guests. "Fine. But let's keep the stakes reasonable. Just something for entertainment, no going overboard."
He turned to Graham. "The two of us will act as the house. How about it?"
"Deal!" Graham stood up and clapped Preston on the shoulder. "Preston, no mercy. I want you to slaughter them!"
Preston smiled, his gaze coldly sweeping over Cyril. What kind of elite education could an illegitimate child possibly have received? How could he even compete?
Within moments, the chess board was set up by the tea table. Everyone moved over to the tearoom, chatting and laughing.
Caspian, along with the Everhart, Blackthorne, and Montclair patriarchs, sat around the table sipping tea. Alaric and Julian stood by to observe the match.
"Vivi, should we join in?"
Vivienne glanced at the crowd in the hall and shook her head. She pulled Bianca closer and whispered something in her ear.
"..."
Bianca froze, gave her a long look, and nodded immediately.
"Okay, I understand."
At that moment, Cedric walked over, handing them a few pens and betting slips.
Bianca took a slip, scribbled a random number, and handed it back. "I'm betting on Cyril."
Cedric nodded. "And you, Miss Lexton?"
"Do I look like I have disposable income right now?"
"..." Cedric's mouth twitched.
"What's going on here?"
Aurelia hurried over, having just dropped Victoria off at her room. She assumed the situation had devolved into a screaming match, only to find everyone happily gathered around a chess board.
Surprised, she looked to Vivienne and Bianca for an explanation.
The two girls played dead, pretending they didn't hear her. The smile on Aurelia's face instantly stiffened.
Seeing the tension, Cedric quickly explained the betting pool and thoughtfully handed her a pen and slip. "Miss Aurelia, perfect timing. Care to join the fun?"
Aurelia nodded. Her gaze drifted past the crowd and landed on Preston. For some reason, her cheeks flushed with heat.
She quickly looked down, wrote a number, and handed it to Cedric. "Cyril."
Vivienne was slightly surprised. She didn't bet on Preston? It seemed Aurelia hadn't fallen completely blindly into his romantic trap just yet.
Noticing the three girls lingering on the outskirts, Caspian waved them over. "The match is starting! Aren't you going to come cheer for Cyril?"
"Coming, Grandpa."
