The gathering concluded on a high note. Caspian Ravenshire, feeling the effects of the liquor, retired early, leaving Alaric Ravenshire to fulfill the duties of a gracious host and personally walk the guests to their cars.
Reginald Montclair had secured the Uzia copper mine for his family, and his elation was impossible to hide. As they parted ways, he showered Graham Everhart and Edmund Blackthorne with gratitude, promising to visit them soon to formally express his thanks.
Graham and Edmund brushed off the pleasantries, exchanged brief farewells, and got into their respective vehicles.
The moment the car door shut, the smile vanished from Graham's face. He closed his eyes and rubbed his temples.
Preston Everhart, knowing his grandfather despised superficial socializing, asked in confusion, "Grandpa, didn't you say the Montclair family was a lost cause? Why did you step in to help Reginald negotiate just because he made a phone call?"
Graham casually rolled a pair of polished walnuts in his palm. "The Montclair family is bleeding out, but a dying giant still casts a massive shadow, especially with their marital ties to the Ravenshires. Stepping in wasn't about giving face to the Montclairs. It was about showing respect to the Ravenshires."
Preston nodded slowly, piecing it together.
Graham glanced out the window as the sprawling Obsidian Estate faded into the distance.
"Do you honestly think Caspian handed the Uzia copper mine over on a whim?"
Preston caught on immediately. "Are you saying the Ravenshire patriarch orchestrated this entire thing? But what does giving them the copper mine achieve? Is he trying to buy their loyalty?"
"Those in power love to play the balancing game," Graham explained. "The Ravenshires and Montclairs are tied together through Dorian Ravenshire's marriage. As long as the Montclairs don't cross the line, Caspian will support them. When you sit at the top, having an extra ally is always better than having another enemy."
Preston fell deep into thought.
Suddenly remembering something, Graham shot Preston a sharp look. "What's the deal with that little Ravenshire girl?"
