Serena listened to the chatter around her, her face draining of color.
Anyone associated with the Ravenshire family should have been parading through the main garden right now. Yet here she was, dumped in the side courtyard. Wasn't this just a blatant way of telling the world that the Ravenshires didn't give a damn about her?
She had schemed and clawed her way to get here, only to be slapped in the face with this outcome. She would have been better off staying home.
After a moment of frantic calculating, Serena turned and chased down the steward in charge of the section.
"Steward Warren."
Warren had spotted her earlier and tried to steer clear, but being called out by name left him no choice but to brace himself. "Ms. Lowe."
Perfect. He remembered her. That made things easier.
Serena flashed a perfectly rehearsed smile. "Warren, it seems there's been a mix-up with our invitations. Could you be a dear and escort us over to the main garden?"
Warren looked visibly uncomfortable. "Ms. Lowe, there's a solid wall separating this side garden from the main estate. A bridge will only be lowered to connect the two once the banquet officially begins. Since you're already inside, I suggest you just wait. My hands are tied."
Without waiting for a response, he turned and practically bolted.
"Butler Warren..." Serena's face contorted, her expression turning ugly at the blatant rejection.
Isabella only half-understood the exchange. "Mom, what's wrong?"
Serena closed her eyes, her nails biting into her palms as she clenched her fists. "I refuse to accept this. Let's see if they really have the power to lock me out of the main estate forever."
