He shook his head. "No, you can't."
Julian's gaze sharpened. "Where exactly do I fall short compared to Alaric?"
Caspian let out a soft chuckle. "I didn't pass you over because you're less capable than Alaric. It's simply because he is better suited for the role. That's all there is to it."
Julian remained unconvinced.
"Julian, do you truly understand the burden of leading this family?" Caspian asked. "Alaric left home at eight and spent seven years living at St. Helorian Chapel. The hardships he endured there are far beyond what ordinary people can fathom. He is detached, self-disciplined, and capable of maintaining absolute, cold objectivity at all times. He is a born strategist. But you are different. Your loves and hates are defined, burning as fiercely as the sun. Forcing you to betray your own principles for the sake of the family would be a fate worse than death. That is why you are meant to build your own empire, to become the shield of the Ravenshires."
The sharp edge in Julian's eyes shattered instantly.
"Julian, you are both irreplaceable to me," Caspian said softly. "Only by playing to your respective strengths and fulfilling your unique duties can the glory of the Ravenshire family continue."
Julian lowered his gaze and downed the rest of his coffee in one gulp.
"I understand, Grandpa."
He set down the cup and reached out to take the gold card from Caspian's hand. "Then I'm going to build my own business empire. A place where my word is absolute law."
That arrogant jerk Alaric could forget about trying to rein him in. His loyalty belonged solely to the family his grandfather had so painstakingly protected.
A sharp knock echoed from the hallway.
"Grandpa."
Just as the tension between the two had finally eased, Cyril's voice called out.
Caspian looked mildly surprised. "Come in."
At his word, Cyril pushed the door open and walked in.
In the brief seconds it took for the younger man to approach, Julian slipped the gold card into the inner pocket of his suit jacket.
Caspian pointed to the armchair on his right, a warm smile on his face. "Cyril? What brings you here?"
"Something happened that didn't sit right with me," Cyril replied, "so I wanted to discuss it with you."
Caspian glanced at Julian, confusion flickering in his eyes. "What exactly happened?"
