"Alright, stop worrying," Zoey said. "The ceremony is starting soon. Have you memorized your speech? There are a lot of important people here today. You have to put on a good show and leave a strong impression."
Isolde finally smiled. "I've been ready."

Freshman Elite Class Three.
"Everyone, get ready. We just got word that the two high priests from the church are going to tour the building first," the class president announced, banging on the podium to wake up the slacking students.
Julianne blew on her manicured nails. "So what? Why do we need to prepare for them?"
In Athelvia, the clergy held a significantly higher status than ordinary citizens. Even politicians relied on them to sway public opinion and dared not offend them lightly.
Julianne only had the nerve to mouth off because her last name was Whitmore. The rest of the class didn't share her luxury and quietly began fixing their uniforms.
Bianca rolled her eyes at Julianne and whispered to Vivienne, "These so-called holy men are just frauds hiding behind God's name."
Vivienne completely agreed. There were no gods in this world. If there was one, it was the Gate of Narrative.
Bianca hooked a finger, gesturing for Vivienne to lean in.
"Vivienne, did you know? These churches just launder money for the wealthy elites and corrupt officials. They're the real monsters in this world."
Vivienne gave her a look of mild surprise. "Looks like you learned a lot this summer."
Bianca winked. "It was very educational. Oh, right!" She leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Guess why I didn't come back until today?"
Vivienne played along. "Why?"
Bianca nodded. "Eighteen years ago. Prince Beaufort and the Princess Consort were invited to Athelvia on a diplomatic mission. On their way back, their plane was attacked by terrorists. Since the incident happened in Athelvia's airspace, the Queen stubbornly cut all diplomatic ties with us, even after Solenforth confirmed the terrorists had nothing to do with our government."
Vivienne's eyes gleamed. This was an incredibly valuable piece of information.
Since this world was a book, every character and subplot had a purpose. Even though she hadn't lived through the later parts of the story, she was absolutely certain that the Queen and the tragic death of her son were massive foreshadowing for the overarching plot.
Catching Vivienne's subtle shift in expression, Bianca brightened up. "Is that helpful?"
Vivienne looked at Bianca's eager face and smiled. "Very helpful."
This was the promise they had made at fourteen. They would grow up strong and become each other's eyes, mapping out the vast world beyond their immediate reach.
