High society was full of people willing to bow and scrape, but a Ravenshire could never be one of them. That was the lesson Caspian constantly drilled into them.
Cyril couldn't help but look up at the girl beside him again. She was executing that philosophy to the absolute letter.
Victoria was completely blindsided by Vivienne's brutal counterattack. This gala was critical for the election and for Jaxen's return. Seeing the situation spiral, Victoria instinctively reached out to grab the glass from Vivienne's hand.
"Vivi, if you keep this up, I'll throw you out myself."
Vivienne had been expecting the move. The moment Victoria reached for her, she subtly flicked her wrist and released her grip. The heavy crystal glass plummeted to the floor.
It shattered with a sharp crash, drawing widespread attention.
"You—"
"Me what?" Vivienne easily grabbed Victoria's wrist, leaning in to whisper, "Family honor isn't a one-person job. It's a reputation every member has to defend. If you don't even understand that basic concept, how could Grandpa ever trust Dorian to take the Speaker seat?"
The words sent a chill through Victoria. Before she could process them, a group of imposing men in suits pushed through the crowd. The leader was exceptionally massive, moving like a walking mountain.
Moira stepped forward to block them. "Who are you people?!"
The man easily shoved Moira aside and stopped aggressively in front of Vivienne.
"Miss Lexton."
"Jasper?" True panic finally broke through Victoria's composure. "What are you doing here?"
"When I left the house, I told Grandpa I was coming to Goldbay to play," Vivienne said breezily. "He was worried I might not have a good time, so he sent Jasper."
She made it sound so casual, but Jasper was Caspian's personal bodyguard. He never left the old man's side. The fact that he was here in Goldbay specifically for Vivienne was a privilege not even Alaric enjoyed.
Victoria forced herself to stay calm, ripping her hand from Vivienne's grip. "What exactly are you trying to pull? I'm warning you, tonight has to go perfectly. If you ruin this, you're ruining the Ravenshire family's face too."
Jasper instantly clamped a hand around Eleanor's throat. Her vision went black, completely choking off her screams.
Such a massive commotion had long drawn the eyes of every guest. Eleanor was the governor; no one here didn't know who she was. Yet, if even she could be dangled like a ragdoll, who would dare intervene?
Victoria hadn't expected Vivienne to be this utterly unhinged. With Jasper present, she had no choice but to swallow her rage and plead. "Vivi, you've taught her a lesson. Let it go. Everyone is watching..."
"I want them to watch," Vivienne interrupted. "I want everyone to know exactly what happens when you refuse a Ravenshire's courtesy. Drag her out."
"Yes, ma'am." Jasper took all his cues exclusively from Vivienne. At her command, he threw Eleanor to the ground, grabbed her by one arm, and unceremoniously dragged her out of the hall.
Victoria's chest burned with sheer fury. She hissed through her teeth, "How dare you? She is the governor."
"If she can't finish her drink, she won't be tomorrow." Vivienne smiled brilliantly at the remaining Goldbay officials, raising her glass of strawberry juice. "Goldbay's future relies on all of you. Since Grandpa couldn't make the trip from Stormhollow, I'll offer a toast on his behalf."
The moment she finished speaking, every single official scrambled to their feet. They tripped over themselves pouring their own drinks until the glasses brimmed over, then held them up with trembling, reverent hands.
