"..."
She was the one who had literally brought a knife to provoke him, and now she was the one acting like he was the threat? How the hell did she manage to be so infuriating? She could make a saint want to commit murder.
Seeing that Cyril wasn't going to respond, Vivienne frowned impatiently. "Did you hear me?"
Cyril's voice was a low, rough rasp. "I heard you."
Her eyes flickered, and she immediately darted back into the bedroom.
The room was completely dark, with only the pale moonlight filtering through to reveal vague silhouettes.
Vivienne did a quick sweep of the space, checking every possible blind spot before pressing her ear against the heavy oak door. She could hear the distinct, rhythmic pacing of heavy boots outside. There were definitely armed guards posted in the hallway.
As the seconds dragged on, her heart hammered erratically against her ribs, and her skin felt like it was catching fire. She desperately fanned her flushed face with her hand. This was ridiculous! The drug's potency was insane. She had barely taken a drop, and she was already a sweating, burning mess.
Back in the study, the rapid-fire clicking of the keyboard finally stopped just before the adrenaline completely overwhelmed his system.
Cloud server established. Data transfer: 100%.
Cyril finally let out a harsh breath. He slammed the laptop shut, clutching his throbbing head as he stumbled out of the study.
Where was she?
He had heard her pacing around earlier, but now the bedroom was dead silent.
"Mmph..."
Cyril froze, a dark gleam flashing in his eyes. Someone was looking incredibly pitiful right now, huddled in the corner by the bed, desperately biting down on the thick duvet. After seeing her act so arrogant and fearless for so long, this vulnerable, desperate look was entirely new.
"..."
Cyril crossed his arms over his chest, slowly walking toward the corner of the bed.
"The door is deadbolted, and there are guards in the hall. Fighting our way out isn't an option," Vivienne continued, her voice trembling but resolute. "Our only play is to stall for time until Grandpa's men breach the ship."
Cyril watched her intently. "How exactly do we stall?"
She glanced around the dark room. "Hide and seek?"
Cyril, "..."
Vivienne pushed on. "I know Grandpa is coming for us. But we can't just sit here like sitting ducks. So, Cyril, we need to make a deal..."
She paused, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the handle of the chef's knife. "If... if things go completely south, we have to make sure at least one of us survives. Whoever gets caught first has to do whatever it takes to buy time for the other. Deal?"
Cyril stared at her for a long second. "Deal."
