Cyril's gaze remained icy. It didn't matter who he was.

A 10% deviation?
Clatter.
Vivienne snapped out of her daze. The fruit knife slipped from her trembling fingers and clattered to the floor.
Balthazar?
Was it this man's identity? Who was he? How did his death cause such a massive shift in the plot?
Cyril turned his head to look at her, his dark eyes swirling with complex emotions. Vivienne, lost in her own shock and confusion, sat completely still.
Silence stretched between them.
Cyril stood up. His mind suddenly flashed back to the intimacy they had just shared on the bed. In this enclosed space, his burning fingertips had traced the edge of the blade, slowly untying the ribbon strapped to her thigh.
He sat back down. His thoughts were a complete mess.
Thud.
Vivienne closed her eyes and fainted dead away.
Cyril's expression tightened, and he shot to his feet.
"They're in here," a voice called out.
They locked eyes for a single, heavy second. Alaric found his answer. He looked back down, adjusting the coat to ensure she was completely covered before lifting her into his arms.
Watching Alaric walk away with her, the feigned warmth in Cyril's eyes cooled by several degrees.
The moment Alaric carried Vivienne out of the secret passage, he ran straight into Julian Ravenshire.
Julian's eyes fixed on Vivienne. "What happened to her? Is she okay?"
"We need to get back to the docks first," Alaric replied evenly.
Julian nodded, glancing around. "Where's that bastard?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Wesley emerged, supporting a battered Cyril.
Cyril looked awful. Julian hesitated before stepping forward to help hold him up. "Look at you, looking like a beaten dog. Weren't you supposed to be tough? Where's the guy with the Beaufort name? Did you catch the guy who dared touch our family?"
Wesley cast a brief glance at Cyril. "He's dead."
Julian froze. Dead? The notorious psycho of the Beaufort family was just... dead?
